First Step Counseling Review
First Step Counseling is an outpatient counseling facility located in San Pedro, California. Based out of a small town in the Port of Los Angeles, First Step Counseling provides services to the entire South Bay area. Working with adults, adolescents and children, First Step Counseling has a team of 16 therapists who are certified to work with chemically dependent individuals. The facility was established in 2013 by Monica Bezzi Demas, an LCSW and LMFT.
Treatment and Staff
First Step Counseling provides a wide range of mental health services. Substance abuse treatment is facilitated primarily through individual therapy in tandem with group therapy. Therapists use evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT methods. Credentialed staff are qualified to provide dual diagnosis support as well as medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Prior to beginning treatment, all potential clients undergo a screening to determine their recovery needs. A bio-psycho-social assessment is used to determine each client’s acuity so the therapy team can develop an individualized treatment plan.
Special groups include trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety and mood disorders. Anger management treatment as well as EMDR are available as is support for ADD and ADHD through individual sessions and medication. Duration of treatment as well as the frequency of sessions are dependent on the needs of the individual with treatment schedules tailored to the client’s work, school or family obligations given top priority. If at any time a client displays the need for more intensive treatment, referrals are available to detox or inpatient treatment facilities.
Staff credentials include Master’s-level and Doctoral-level practitioners as well as psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, MFTs, Nutrition Therapists, CASACs and Intervention Specialist. Each therapist has their own unique approach to assisting clients but make a unified effort to helping each individual. Substance abuse clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings to supplement and support long-term recovery.

First Step Counseling provides family and couples therapy in tandem with substance abuse treatment. Staff understand that the disease of addiction and alcoholism permeates the family unit and can put stress upon relationships and the household and work to provide educational sessions for the families and spouses while the individual is in treatment.
