First Health of The Carolinas: Addiction Recovery Services Outpatient Review
First Health of The Carolinas is a network of four hospitals and several satellite clinics in North Carolina. Its Addiction Recovery Services (ARS) program is located in Pinehurst, a small town known for its resplendent golf course at The Pinehurst Resort. ARS offers outpatient substance abuse treatment at the Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) levels of care and detox and inpatient treatment for those with co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are placed on either the PHP or IOP treatment track. PHP clients attend group therapy from 8:30 am to three pm each day. IOP clients attend group therapy from 8:30 am to 12 pm, and the number of days each are determined in their treatment plan. Clients in both programs have individual therapy at least once a week. The lengths of treatment plans are customized to the clients’ needs, and clients can step down from the PHP level to the IOP level as they progress in recovery. Therapy groups usually have 10 or fewer participants and therapists use CBT, trauma-informed care and the 12-step framework. Clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings, as well.
The comprehensive treatment team is experienced in treating co-occurring disorders. The team is comprised of Master’s-level therapists including LPCs, LCSWs and psychologists. Psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychiatrists are also available for medication management for dual diagnosis clients.
Extras
ARS offers a family therapy group and family therapy for loved ones to receive support and addiction education. It also provides a weekly Professionals Support Aftercare group for executives and other professionals who’ve completed residential or outpatient treatment.
As IOP clients near the end of their treatment plan, therapists and case managers help create an aftercare plan that might include ongoing therapy and referrals to community agencies for health, housing and employment support.
