Farnham Family Services Review
Farnham Family Services (FFS) is a United Way agency that offers outpatient substance abuse treatment in Fulton and Oswego, New York, near Lake Ontario. Established in 1971, FFS offers prevention services, both standard and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and a dedicated therapy track for opiate addicts.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are placed on one of four treatment tracks. The lowest intensity, Abuse Diagnosis, meets for 10 weeks. Clients attend group therapy twice a week for their first 30 days and then once a week for six weeks.
Clients in the Non-Intensive Treatment track have group therapy three times a week for four weeks, twice a week for six weeks and then once a week for six weeks—totaling 16 weeks of treatment.
Clients in the Intensive Treatment track progress through four phases of treatment. Phase one meets for group therapy four times a week for 30 days. Phase two meets three times a week for six weeks. Phase three meets for group therapy twice a week and phase four meets once a week for six weeks. Throughout the 22 weeks of treatment, clients also have individual therapy, usually once a week.
Clients in the Opiate Pathway program receive medication management from their personal physician and attend group and individual therapy at FFS. These clients meet for group therapy four times a week for four weeks during phase one. In phase two, group therapy meets three times a week for 10 weeks. In phase three, groups meet once a week for eight weeks. Throughout the 22 weeks of treatment, clients attend individual therapy as-needed.
Clients in each treatment tack are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings during and after program completion.
Groups have a maximum of 15 participants and use evidence-based therapies such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The treatment team at FFS includes Master’s-level therapists such as LMHCs and LMSWs, addiction counselors with the CASAC credential as well as LPNs and physicians. The treatment team is experienced in treating co-occurring disorders but clients are referred to nearby mental health clinics for prescriptions for their mental health diagnosis.
Extras
Family members and partners of clients can attend individual sessions if the client and therapist feels it would be beneficial. FFS also endorses meditation as an effective tool for managing addiction and provides several meditation resources on its website.
