Family Service League Review
Founded in 1926 as a grassroots social service agency, Family Service League is an expansive organization with 50 social service programs with multiple locations based in Huntington, Long Island. Family Service League primarily serves residents of Suffolk County. Among its many programs, the organization provides substance abuse care on an outpatient basis at its Bay Shore, East Yaphank and Riverhead locations.
Treatment and Staff
Family Service League works with the Suffolk County Courts, the Department of Probation Parole and Child Protective Services to provide treatment plans that meet court requirements. Still, self-referred clients are welcome as well. On-site detox services are not available, but referrals can be provided if necessary.
The most comprehensive substance abuse program offered at Family Service League is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which consists of three three-hour group therapy sessions each week. Additionally, clients can expect individual therapy sessions once a week and no less than once a month. Groups tend to focus on CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques and never contain more than 15 clients at a time. There are also special groups dedicated to anger management, anxiety and relapse prevention.
Typically, the IOP at Family Service League lasts six weeks. By the end of these six weeks, clients usually step down to only one to two group sessions a week and individual therapy as needed. While there are no 12-step meetings held on-site, clients are given a referral list of local meetings in the community and are encouraged to attend.
Family Service League includes 12 CADCs who generally lead these sessions, as well as a medical director and LSWs. Family Service League also offers dual diagnosis support, with clients able to attend three specific groups each week that address co-occurring disorders. There is a psychiatrist on staff who provides evaluations and medication management as well. An entirely separate mental health services department is available for clients in need of more comprehensive care.
Extras
Though there is no official aftercare program, clients can extend their group therapy sessions longer than six weeks as needed and can also be referred to other mental health programs for ongoing care.
In addition to medication management, Family Service League also provides a Suboxone program for those who are also attending IOP. Vivitrol can also be administered to those who qualify.
In Summary
Given its long history in Long Island, Family Service League is a dependable organization with a history of delivering community-oriented care programs. Clients can expect evidence-based treatment through flexible programs with dual-diagnosis support available as necessary. In all, Family Service League is an affordable program worth considering for those in the area.
