bensalem pennsylvaniaFamily House Review

Located in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, Family House is the residential care option for women and families available through Libertae, Inc. This long-term program offers trauma-informed care using a mixture of evidence-based therapy and the 12 steps. Women who are pregnant or parenting are welcome, as the facility provides ample childcare and prenatal support.

Accommodations and Food

During their time in treatment, women and children live in a large comfortable home. This familiar environment features shared bedrooms and baths, as well as cozy common areas with sectional couches and a TV for use during downtime. The childcare center includes a large play room and toys for children to use. When the weather permits, women can take breaks outside in an on-site gazebo. Smoking is permitted in designated areas on the property.

Clients and their children are provided with three meals per day. All food is served on-site consists primarily of healthy items. Dietary requests and allergies can usually be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

Family House offers a comprehensive and gender-specific approach with dual-diagnosis support available. However, clients with mental health issues must be able to function cohesively within the group. Women at Family House learn new social behaviors, employment skills and the development of integrity and honesty. Detox must be completed prior to admittance.

The residential program typically lasts from 30 to 90 days. Recovery incorporates the principles of AA, as well as evidence-based therapies like CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Frequent attendance of AA/NA meetings is a major part of the program as well. Clients participate in weekly individual therapy and daily group therapy sessions including topics like trauma recovery, life skills, self esteem, spirituality, grief and loss, stress reduction, goal setting and job searching. There is also health and nutrition education, addiction education and case management.

Mothers have access to prenatal care and parenting services. While in treatment, children attend the on-site family center or the local school. The women themselves are also required to spend time in the family center, participating in the daily activities. These services are included in the price of admission.

For those in need of mental health support, a consulting psychiatrist is available for medication management. As treatment nears its end, women work with their counselors to create an aftercare plan. This may include an outpatient program through another facility or sober living home available through Libertae. The staff consists of LADCs, licensed childcare professionals and a consulting psychiatrist.

Extras

The social services offered at Family House include job training and placement, GED and adult education, housing referrals, pro bono legal services, advocacy, court accompaniment, medical referrals, credit counseling, budgeting, transportation and referrals to community resources. Upon completing the residential program, the women are able to transition into Libertae’s halfway house or Crossroads program.

In Summary

Overall, Family House is a great residential program for mothers struggling with substance abuse. Thanks to accommodations for children and the day care center,  women who normally wouldn’t be able to attend treatment can get the help they need. From life skills to employment to 12-step recovery, this program provides a wide range of services to help young mothers in recovery from many angles.
