FGCFamily Guidance Centers Review

Family Guidance Centers was founded in 1969 as a nonprofit organization to provide behavioral health care to the community. Now FGC has 10 locations serving Illinois, most of them either in or close to Chicago (including Des Plaines, Harvey, Joliet and Aurora), with treatment options including an outpatient program, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), medically supervised detox and an inpatient program.

Accommodations and Food

The residential programs treat clients at three Chicago-area hospitals (Thorek, Methodist and St. Bernard) with staff on hand 24/7. Clients share a room with one other person, unless they are in detox, in which case they are placed in a single room. There are no electronic devices of any kind allowed and smoking is prohibited. Meals are served in the cafeteria three times a day.

Treatment and Staff

FGC offers various treatment programs for their clients. Their medically supervised detox services—located at the St. Bernard and Methodist hospitals—have physicians on site 24/7 to assist clients.

The IOP program is intended for individuals who need treatment but are also able to pursue recovery without the help of a residential facility. The program offers an initial assessment, group therapy, individual therapy, case management and periodic drug screening. FGC also has an opiate dependency recovery program, uses methadone as an adjunct in treatment and provides medication management as a recovery tool.

The IOP at FGC is for those who need a more intensive treatment program than the regular outpatient program. It includes an initial assessment to help develop an individualized treatment plan for the client. In addition to educational courses on substance abuse, clients receive individual and group counseling, relapse prevention counseling, case management and regular drug screenings. Clients must attend at least nine hours of counseling a week to complete the program.

The residential program incorporates all of the aspects of the IOP with the addition of 24/7 care and a sober environment.

The staff at FGC consists of physicians, licensed psychologists, nurses, LADCs, case managers, social workers and detox coordinators.

Extras

In addition to their numerous treatment programs, FGC offers a variety of other services to their clients. Mental health services beyond addiction and substance abuse include trauma counseling, help for developing a healthy family, developing social relationships, HIV/AIDS screening and assessment, community education programs and assistance in finding sober living arrangements or environments.

Special programming is also available for women and children, pregnant and postpartum women, criminal justice offenders and clients with special needs.

In Summary

Family Guidance Centers is not for those looking for luxury, but their impressive array of services may just make up for it. Detox services, intensive and regular outpatient programs, a residential program and numerous other supportive services are offered, making this a great one-stop shop for recovery.
