reno nevadaFamily Counseling Service of Northern Nevada, Inc. Review

Family Counseling Service of Northern Nevada, Inc. is the oldest outpatient facility in Northern Nevada offering comprehensive therapy services. Assistance is available for clients struggling with mental health issues, substance abuse and sexual abuse. Payee support and bankruptcy services are also provided. In general, treatment is non-intensive, affordable and flexible utilizing evidence-based methods.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients must complete an evaluation to determine whether treatment at FCSNN is the best fit. Should more intensive support be required, clients are referred to a near-by residential treatment or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in the community. Medication management services are not offered.

Treatment options at FCSNN include individual and group therapy sessions on a weekly basis. Sessions include hour-long substance abuse groups that take place on Wednesdays at 1 and Fridays at 5 pm. These groups are only open to adults aged 18 and over. Clients are either advised to attend one or both groups depending on their needs. During sessions, a licensed therapist uses psycho-education and psychotherapy to discuss topics such as depression, anxiety, addiction, dual diagnosis, PTSD, physical and emotional abuse, communication, coping skills and relapse prevention.

Individual sessions are also available and are scheduled as needed. All clients are encouraged to participate in a 12-step program, though this is not a required part of the program. Still, therapists provide information to support group meetings in the community while advising clients to get a sponsor and start working the steps.

Staff members at FCSNN include LADCs and LCSWs trained in CBT and DBT.

Extras

Sexual abuse treatment groups for children, teens and adults is also available. The group for boys and girls between the ages of eight and 12 is held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5 pm. There is also a youth domestic violence group held at the same time on Thursdays and an adult women’s domestic violence group on Wednesdays from 5:15 to 6:15 pm. Pre-bankruptcy Financial Counseling Certificate classes are available for those looking to file bankruptcy.

Additionally, a Safe Families Summer Camp for youth between the ages of eight and 17 and their families is available. The program is designed to help promote a healthy family dynamic and to avoid the cycle of violence. It’s typically a week long and includes counseling, fun activities and 24/7 access to mental health professionals.

In Summary

Overall, Family Counseling Service of Northern Nevada, Inc. treats clients using non-intensive psycho-therapeutic techniques. Group and individual sessions using evidence-based techniques are combined with 12-step encouragement. While this facility may not be ideal for those in need of more acute treatment, Family Counseling Service of Northern Nevada remains a strong outpatient resource for those in the area.
