Family Counseling Center, Inc.Family Counseling Center, Inc. Review

With a history of providing behavioral health services to southern Missouri residents since 1976, Family Counseling Center, Inc. has grown to include facilities in 13 cities, accessible to residents in 28 counties. One of Family Counseling Center’s most prominent substance abuse programs is its inpatient division at the Stapleton and West Plains locations, the latter of which is called the Turning Leaf Adult Treatment Center, which offers a good insight into the overall level of care offered.

Accommodations and Food

Family Counseling Center’s Turning Leaf Adult Treatment Center facility is a 16-bed, co-ed residential home located in a rural setting in the small city of West Plains. Clients typically have one roommate in rooms furnished with twin beds and other basic furnishings. Very rarely, three residents share a room. The men’s and women’s hallways are divided by gender and each hall has shared bathrooms. There is also a handicapped-accessible room with a private bathroom.

Three hot meals are provided each day by two staff cooks and clients have community meals in the house dining room. There are also free snacks and drinks, such as fruit, coffee and tea, provided throughout the day and clients can also purchase their own snacks from an on-site vending machine. The facility also allows time for leisure and exercise, with three break periods per day when clients can take walks outside. There is also exercise equipment on the premises.

Treatment and Staff

Turning Leaf Adult Treatment Center is a 30-day program which features a full-day schedule of group therapy, individual therapy and general education sessions. The staff is primarily comprised of LADCs and therapy focuses on general recovery subjects such as relapse prevention, coping skills, self-esteem building and identifying potential triggers.

Twelve-step recovery is a major component of the Family Counseling Center program and clients can expect frequent on-site meetings, as well as transportation to off-site meetings and guest lectures from members of the local AA, NA and Alanon communities. Dual diagnosis care is also available with group sessions dedicated to co-occurring disorders, as well as medication management which is overseen by a consulting physician and distributed by the Turning Leaf staff. Similarly, the facility assists clients who are receiving methadone maintenance, providing transportation each day to a local methadone center.

After thirty days in residence, clients typically continue treatment at the Turning Leaf facility, transitioning into the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which starts off with a busy schedule of treatment, comprised of a similar routine of group and individual therapy, five days a week from 9 am to 4 pm. Clients who have to miss a weekday of treatment can also make it up on the weekends. Following this period, which typically lasts another 30 days, clients begin a tapering-off period, wherein they attend treatment on a standard outpatient schedule of groups once or twice a week and individual sessions as needed. This transitional period is the facility’s unofficial aftercare program and extends over a long stretch of time, typically nine months total.

Extras

In addition to its inpatient program for substance abuse at the Turning Leaf Adult Treatment Center, Family Counseling Center also has two other distinct residential programs which match Turning Leaf’s level of care. There’s the Stapleton Center in Hayti for adult male and female clients (which also features the Copper Commons halfway house, located next door for clients transitioning out of a residential program) and a women’s residential program located at Family Counseling Center’s Cape Giraradeau location.

In Summary

Given the wide range of available services, Family Counseling Center, Inc. is a major community resource for residents in southern Missouri. For men and women seeking the intensity of an inpatient program for substance abuse, the facility’s Turning Leaf Adult Treatment Center in West Plains—as well as the Stapleton Center in Hayti—offer comprehensive, 12-step influenced long term care with an accompanying IOP to follow.
