Faith Hope Love Christian MinistriesFaith, Hope & Love Christian Ministries Review

Faith, Hope & Love Christian Ministries is a gender-specific and faith-based sober living for men located in Cowpens, a small South Carolina town just outside of Spartanburg. Providing a supportive environment that integrates several recovery philosophies and Christian principles, FHLCM addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual effects of addiction. Open since 2013, it offers two sober homes on one large, private property surrounded by trees.

Accommodations and Amenities

FHLCM accommodates up to 12 men total. One of the homes is a large brick house that sleeps seven men in three bedrooms, one with two twin beds and the other sleeping three with one twin and bunk beds. Each bedroom has plenty of closet space and a shared dresser. Two shared bathrooms have showers, dual sinks and cabinets to store personal belongings. The kitchen is stocked with appliances and cooking supplies and is connected to the laundry area—all cleaning supplies are supplied. The living room has cable TV, a DVD library and plenty of comfortable seating. The dining room has a formal-sized table and enough seating for communal meals.

The second home also offers three bedrooms, with two double rooms and one single. All beds are twin-sized and each room has a shared closet and dressers. There are two shared bathrooms with showers and single sinks. The kitchen is considerably smaller in this house but offers all the same appliances and supplies as the main house.

The backyard of the property has a vegetable garden, wood-working shop, horseshoe games, a full basketball court and an open grass field for recreation. A deck in the back has seating and a barbecue for grilling.

Rules and Regulations

The minimum length of stay at FHLCM is six months and the maximum is eight months. All potential clients must have 28 days of sobriety and have completed an inpatient treatment program prior to admission. Residents must agree to live a faith-based lifestyle and completely dedicate themselves to a program of recovery. No drugs or alcohol are permitted on the premises and consumption of any will result in immediate eviction. Residents are tested at random with urinalysis and a Breathalyzer to ensure sobriety.

The home uses principles from the Christian faith, 12-step fellowships and Celebrate Recovery. All residents must attend a minimum of three meetings per week including one Bible study, AA/NA, Celebrate Recovery or church service. Residents are required to seek sponsorship or discipleship with the support group of their choice and follow the suggested guidelines of that group. Studying the Bible is required.

FHLCM requires that all house rules and staff be respected at all times. No profanity, fighting or stealing is allowed and is considered an offense meriting eviction. Discrimination, insubordination toward staff, harassment of others and constant gossiping are not permitted. No body piercings are allowed and tattoos will be reviewed by staff and approved depending on subject matter.

During a resident’s stay, they must be either completing chores, working or seeking employment during the day. All house chores must be done daily and clients must keep their personal and shared spaces clean. All men must be up at 6:30 am with their bed made and have completed a morning meditation prior to breakfast. Meals are scheduled and curfew is at 11 pm nightly. Weekend passes are permitted after 30 days.

Extras

FHLCM fosters relationships and community partnerships throughout Cowpens and Spartanburg County. Church, corporate, nonprofit and public sector organizations assist the house and residents by providing funding, employment opportunities, reintegration services and placement assistance.

In Summary

For men seeking a structured sober living home with a faith-based approach, FHLCM is an ideal choice. With transportation and support to community meetings and church, clients are encouraged to build a spiritual foundation for long-term sobriety. Public funding provides residents with free housing until they have secured a stable job, at which time they begin to pay the affordable rent of $75 per week.
