Fairhaven House Review

Fairhaven House is a Seattle based, faith oriented sober housing program operated through Seattle Open Door Church. This program is for men and women who are new to sobriety and need an affordable and safe housing option while getting back on their feet. One unique aspect of Fairhaven House that differs from other transitional housing options is that clients are considered members of the community, and in addition to the housing options are provided with spiritual guidance and assistance within the discipleship.

Accommodations and Amenities

There are four separate housing facilities through Fairhaven, with two for men, one for women and one specifically for married couples. The facilities are large homes that offer anywhere from three to seven bedrooms with bonus studio apartments attached. There are both private and semi-private bedrooms available, and every location is fully furnished. These locations have full kitchens, dining rooms, washer and dryers, TVs with cable, Wifi and on-site parking.

Clients are responsible for buying and making their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

The Fairhaven House is a program directed at Christian people, or people who would like to learn about Christianity, who have been sober for at least 30 days. Though this is a program strongly rooted in religion, they make it clear that they don’t force their beliefs on anyone. There is a zero tolerance policy for substances, gambling, or porn on the premises, and all of the facilities are smoke free.

Clients who are living at one of the homes are now considered members of the church, and are opportunities to help out with ministry events, and there are prayer sessions and spiritual coaching offered to all residents. In addition to these offerings, clients are also encouraged to seek out local 12-step meetings, get a sponsor and being to work the steps.

A commitment to stay in the program for at least two months is required. The stay can be extended for up to a year and a half. There is an 11 pm curfew, daily chores that need to be completed and attendance for the Sunday and Wednesday evening church services is mandatory. Clients must have a full time job a couple of weeks after move in, and after the first 30 days, can obtain a 48 hour weekend pass. There are also regular drug screenings every clients has to submit to.

In Summary

Fairhaven House is a positive, spiritually driven transitional housing program that encourages clients to want to seek out a happier life in recovery. There is a requirement that even if a client is not a Christian that he will be open to learning more about it, but the idea behind the program is really about finding a community. Fairhaven House is a good first step in the right direction.
