Fair Start Review
Based out of Portland, Oregon, Fair Start is an outpatient-based behavioral health service helmed by Dr. Paul Thomas, a physician who is both a board-certified pediatrist and an addictionologist. Drawing on both of these proficiencies, Fair Start provides flexible and individualized outpatient detox services for adolescents and young adults struggling with opiate addictions.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs and plan their care. As an outpatient-based program, those in need of high-intensity medical or psychiatric supervision will need to seek these services elsewhere.
In general, the program includes in-home medical supervision and medication monitoring on an outpatient-basis, though the specifics of each of these schedules may vary depending on the severity of the case in question. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available as necessary along with referrals to nearby 12-step meetings and individual counseling with evidence-based methods like CBT and DBT. In general, counseling sessions cover the same material that would be covered for adults, with special attention paid to adolescent and young adult needs such as the pressures of school and family life. Due to the limited nature of the program, extensive dual diagnosis support is not available.
The staff at Fair Start consists of Dr. Paul Thomas himself along with nurses, case managers and additional Master’s-level drug counselors.
Extras
As mentioned, all of these outpatient detox programs can be designed individually to suit each person’s schedule. Support for street-level drugs and prescribed painkillers are available as well. Those who complete one of these programs can also work with the staff to develop stepped-down aftercare and discharge plans whenever necessary.

In all, Fair Start is a relatively unique program in that it’s specifically applicable to young adults and adolescents addicted to opiates. Treatment plans are individualized and include evidence-based individual counseling, medical supervision and aftercare planning whenever necessary. while anyone in need of more extensive supervision or dual diagnosis support may need to seek additional help elsewhere, Fair Start remains a strong resource worth considering for those in the area.
