Explorations Review
Located in the small town of Trout Creek, Montana, about a two hour drive northwest of Missoula, Explorations is an adventure-based residential treatment program. It specializes in the care of teenage clients struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders, as well as co-occurring mental health challenges and personal issues such as self-esteem or a lack of communication skills. Explorations also facilitates individual and group therapy as well as 12-step recovery and medication management.
Accommodations and Food
Explorations is located on 80 acres of scenic landscape. To make residents as comfortable as possible, it provides a home-like atmosphere situated in a large log cabin complete with a spacious dining area and sleeping accommodations. Given the nature of the program, the residents sometimes go camping and can also sleep in teepees on the property. In addition to the surrounding nature, the facility has a basketball court and climbing wall. Residents are allowed to speak with their parents weekly on the phone.
The clients prepare many of their own meals, and are responsible for cleaning up after themselves. While camping, residents also find and haul the firewood for cooking.
Treatment and Staff
As a therapeutic wilderness program, Explorations is ideal for client that felt over-looked in larger residential programs. So that each individual has the most positive experience possible, every client’s treatment strategy is customized to meet their unique needs. Residents also undergo a comprehensive assessment with the psychiatrist to determine if medication management is necessary. Explorations employs a multi-faceted approach to care that incorporates an array of therapies into the experiential curriculum. Individuals engage in individual and group counseling, family sessions and an immersion into the 12-step program.
Explorations understands the integral role that family plays in the success of a healthy teen and a sustainable, long-term recovery. To this end, the facility routinely hosts outdoor trips for families as well as a camp specifically for siblings. Parents are able to connect with their children in a completely unique environment, while at the same time learning how they can help from the parent coaches and therapists.
The Explorations team is comprised of counselors, adventure guides, tutors, Master’s-level therapists, mentors, parent coaches and a psychiatrist. Medication management is available for individuals with co-occurring disorders in need of dual diagnosis support.

Explorations teaches a range of life skills including personal finance, budgeting and goal setting as well as academic components such as standardized testing and college applications.
