Everest Institute LLC offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Urbandale, an upscale suburb of Des Moines, Iowa. Having offered general behavioral health services since 1983, EI expanded their services to include intensive substance abuse treatment in 2005. The program’s clinical director is Deana Schuplin—a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and International Alcohol and Drugs Counselor (IADC)—who has been in practice and working with addiction sufferers for over 20 years.
Treatment and Staff
EI’s treatment philosophy is based on three elements that are critical for successfully treating substance abuse: addiction education, learning new coping abilities and developing interpersonal skills to cultivate healthy relationships which meet emotional needs. To explore these principles, clients meet for group therapy three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm. Groups are usually capped at ten participants. The clinicians at Everest Institute are LISWs and psychologists. Individual therapy is provided as needed, and clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to an affiliated mental health clinic for psychiatric services and medication management.
Clients stay in the program for as long as they and their counselor consider it necessary, with most staying an average of three months. Therapists use psychoeducation, Motivational Therapy (MI), CBT and Family Systems techniques. While groups don’t specifically work the 12-steps, they offer an orientation to the principles and EI encourages clients to attend AA/NA meetings on their own to support their long-term sobriety.
Given each clinician’s extensive experience with a variety of psychotherapy techniques, Everest Institute may be a good choice for those who are eager to understand how their family systems and personal choices impact their addiction. While individual therapy is not part of every client’s treatment plan, the intimacy of the groups ensure that each client is given the individual attention they need to establish long-term recovery.
