Founded in 2002, Eternal Awakenings is a Christian-based residential substance abuse treatment facility for men and women in Gonzales, Texas—just an hour east of San Antonio. It offers a unique, faith-based holistic recovery program that incorporates medical supervision, the spiritual principles of the 12 steps and an emphasis on outdoor activities and physical fitness.
Accommodations and Food
The Eternal Awakenings house is a renovated historic mansion on a large estate. The location provides a comfortable living environment close to nature and away from the activity of city life. The house offers gender-specific shared bedrooms for up to 10 clients at a time with two to three residents in each room. There is a chapel on the grounds, called Living Waters Fellowship Chapel, where clients attend services.
Residents are provided three healthy meals a day. Residents typically take turns preparing lunch and dinner, whereas breakfast is typically served cold and consists of cereal, toast, fruit and coffee.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment is typically four weeks and structured around daily participation in faith-based activities. During the day, clients attend morning devotions, Bible studies, chapel services and 12-step meetings held on-site. All residents are introduced to the 12 steps and taken through the first five during the course of the program. Family members are encouraged to schedule counseling sessions with their loved ones while they are in treatment.
If necessary, Eternal Awakenings’ residents see consulting doctors weekly on Tuesdays. Clients have access to an addiction physician or a psychiatrist, depending on individual need. Doctors help with general medical issues associated with addiction, including psychotherapy and medication management for clients who need dual diagnosis support and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those withdrawing from opiates. Doctor visits are not covered in the cost of treatment. The initial evaluation is $300 and each subsequent visit is $150. There are also male and female CADCs available who offer individual sessions on an as-needed basis.
In addition to consulting medical professionals, the staff includes alumni volunteers, ministers and CADCs. Eternal Awakenings was created by Jim and Karla Welch, a husband and wife team who have both been sober for more than 20 years. They left their jobs as secular addiction counselors because they felt inspired to open a faith-based facility and are very involved with the daily operations.
The Eternal Awakenings organization is associated with a fitness center a short walk from the estate, called Revival Fitness. All clients are offered a free membership during their stay. The gym has weights, cardio equipment, daily Cross-Fit classes, a tanning bed and a massage therapist on staff. All revenue generated from the gym is used to fund the organization’s recovery programs.
Eternal Awakenings offers affordable faith-based treatment that is unique in its emphasis on real life recovery tools in addition to Jesus. It caters to voluntary clients looking to overcome addiction through religion and the 12 steps. While those who are not religious are also welcome, Eternal Awakenings is probably best suited for clients wanting recovery in a Christian setting.
