Esperanza Recovery Review
Esperanza Recovery is a sober living home for men located in Carlsbad, California.The house sits on a hill behind the world-famous La Costa golf course. Men who come to Esperanza Recovery are given the tools to begin building a sober lifestyle. Clients are expected to attend support groups and take advantage of the freedom that a transitional environment like this one provides by building relationships and a strong sober network.
Accommodations and Amenities
Esperanza is a palatial home with six beds, five bedrooms and four bathrooms. The modern exterior has the look of a resort destination more than a sober living. The interior has an open layout, with a huge foyer, new furniture, a large dining room and a full kitchen and coffee bar. On the second story is a lounge area with a pool table and TV that has cable and satellite. There are five private rooms and one gigantic master bedroom with a California king bed and its own balcony. Single, private rooms are also available. In the backyard, clients can relax on the patio by the pool and Jacuzzi. The main common area serves as a community space for the mandatory house meetings every Thursday.
Residents eat two meals a day independently as there is no chef on staff. However, they prepare one home-cooked meal a day together. Clients are transported to the local Vons to buy groceries. They do their own laundry with the on-site washer and dryer. Computers and phones are allowed and the house has a free Wi-Fi connection.
Rules and Regulations
The average stay at Esperanza is between 30 and 90 days. While they are making plans for the future, clients must also attend to their recovery. Men at Esperanza must either be engaged in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or regular outpatient program and be working or in school. Clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings or alternative support groups like SMART Recovery. Educational classes about addiction and relapse prevention groups are held on site.
Aside from abstinence from drugs and alcohol, there are some hard and fast rules at Esperanza. The curfew Sunday through Thursday is 10 pm and 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Clients agree to submit to random breathalyzers and drug tests throughout their stay.
Esperanza allows for same-day sign-up for clients who are ready to live in the house. A credit check is not required; clients can sign a contract with no deposit on their first visit.
In Summary
The atmosphere at Esperanza Recovery is congenial and relaxed. Clients who come here continue recovery, for all intents and purposes, at a vacation destination. But although the schedule and atmosphere is flexible, a lot is still expected of clients at this sober living: outpatient work, plans for employment and education, commitment to a recovery program and contributing to the peer support network at the house. Vacation spot or not, Esperanza Recovery clients will gain as much as they are expected to put in to their recovery.
