Asheville North CarolinaEquinox Recovery Review

Founded in 2015 in Asheville, North Carolina by Brian Mishoulam, who has seven years of sobriety, Equinox Recovery provides high-end sober living, along with wilderness therapy for men in recovery from chemical dependency. Their mission is to help men connect to their Higher Power while they experience the beauty of nature in their backyard.

Accommodations and Amenities

Equinox Recovery accommodates between 14 and 15 men in a lush Cape Cod style house, which sits on a a full acre lot, a short distance away from the Mountains-to-Sea Trail. The house has herb gardens, a fire pit, sitting areas and is surrounded by trees. The wrap-around porch provides a scenic mountain view.

Between two and three men share comfortably furnished rooms, which include twin beds, dressers, walk-in closets, nightstands, windows and a private attached bathroom. The house includes a fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a gas range and granite counters. The kitchen is fully stocked with groceries, which is purchased by staff on a weekly basis. Additionally, there is a list that includes any special food requests. Residents are responsible for their own meal preparation.

On Sundays, residents enjoy a family-style dinner, followed by a house meeting with members from the local recovery community, as well as Equinox Recovery alumni. Amenities include a 65’ plasma HDTV, Netflix, gaming systems, laundry facilities, gym memberships, Wi-Fi and an office with a computer and printer. Two residential managers live on the premises and oversee operations. While Mishoulam doesn’t live there, he spends a majority of his time at the house, providing support and guidance.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients are required to have undergone 30 days of primary care at a drug rehab. A 90-day minimum length of stay is required.

At Equinox Recovery, clients participate in a three-phase system. During the first phase, which lasts between 30 and 60 days, residents delve into the local 12-step community and staff helps them build a healthy routine which includes getting a job, enrolling in school or signing up for community service. Residents are not permitted to have cars, nor are they allowed extended curfews. Additionally, residents must complete eight weeks of Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP) at The Road, Inc. Treatment includes nine hours of group therapy. Other requirements include attending five 12-step meetings, getting a sponsor, doing the steps and participating in morning meditations. Residents are allowed to transition into the second phase per staff’s approval.

During the second phase, clients must be actively working, enrolled in school or regularly doing community service. Also, they must be working actively with their sponsors. In the third phase, residents begin to re-enter society. Staff works closely with clients and helps them prepare discharge plans. The curfew is 10:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Other services include job support, case management, sponsorship assistance, nutritional counseling, group and individual therapy, on the premises. Both sessions are held weekly, and are facilitated by a CSAC. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Those who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises. The 30-day cost is $4,000 and is all-inclusive, except for the IOP at The Road, which is usually covered by insurance.

Extras

Wilderness therapy is an integral part of the program, and clients participate in hiking, biking, basketball and other outdoor activities.

By May 2016, Equinox Recovery is relocating to a more spacious home in the local vicinity.
