baltimore marylandEpoch Counseling Center Review

Based in Baltimore County, Maryland, the Epoch Counseling Center is the non-profit outpatient substance abuse and educational wing of the Friends Research Institute, a federal, state and county funded research foundation which has conducted studies in the field of substance abuse, health, HIV/AIDS, mental health and criminal justice for over 50 years. Epoch Counseling Center has had a distinguished history itself, with over 35 years of experience of providing substance abuse services to adolescents and adults in three locations in Baltimore County, including Catonsville, Dundalk and Essex. Epoch Counseling Center offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as a variety of other services.

Treatment and Staff

The IOP at Epoch Counseling Center is a Maryland state-certified Level II service, which features group therapy sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 4 pm. These sessions focus on CBT with an emphasis on relapse prevention as well. Other sessions include the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Clients can also expect individual therapy sessions as well as family counseling, vocational training, help with GED preparation, an introduction to 12-step support groups and on-site drug screens. Adult IOP is available at all of Epoch Counseling Center’s locations, whereas adolescents can find an IOP for them at the Catonsville and Essex facilities. Adolescents participating in the program can also receive free transportation to and from Epoch’s facilities when necessary.

There is dual-diagnosis care provided at Epoch Counseling Center in the form of individual therapy sessions and groups dedicated to mental health recovery. While there is no psychiatrist on staff at Epoch Counseling Center, clients can set up an on-site psychiatric visit when needed. There are also specific group sessions dedicated to anger management which emphasize cognitive restructuring and personal responsibility. For clients in this track as the result of a court mandate, there is a comprehensive examination at the end of the program.

Suboxone services are also provided at Epoch Counseling Center, typically lasting less than six months. Those who wish to participate in this program must participate in the IOP as well as schedule appointments with Epoch Counseling Center’s referred physician. There is no medical detox provided at Epoch Counseling Center, though clients in need of this service can be referred to a nearby facility during their initial intake evaluation.

While the length of program varies depending on a client’s needs, they must complete at least a month of the IOP to begin a standard outpatient program, which consists of at least one three hour session a week. From here, clients must complete at least 16 group sessions before moving on to Epoch Counseling Center’s aftercare program, which typically takes the form of two group sessions a month with continuing access to Epoch Counseling Center’s resources.

Each Epoch location is supervised by a licensed clinician or an LPC who has been approved as a supervisor by the Maryland State Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists. The counseling staff includes LADCs and LCSWs in addition to interns and trainees. Staff that treat adolescents have specific training with this age group.

Extras

Epoch Counseling Center is also certified to provide a Level 0.5 early intervention DUI/DWI education program which fulfills court mandated requirements. Clients attend an initial intake, six group sessions and a final exit interview to complete this program.

In Summary

With an impressive history of service, multiple locations and an association with the Friends Research Institute, The Epoch Counseling Center has long been a staple of Baltimore County recovery services. Clients can expect a comprehensive IOP with group and individual sessions, specific groups for co-occurring disorders, anger management classes, a family program, as well as an IOP tailored to adolescents.
