Enki Health and Research Systems Review
Named after the Sumerian god Enki, the lord of water and wisdom, Enki Health and Research Systems, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that specializes in the care of clients struggling with mental illness and co-occurring disorders. Enki offers a full range of outpatient mental health services for adults, the elderly, homeless populations, children and their families coping with a broad range of illnesses and conditions including chronic mental illness, trauma, substance use disorders and severe emotional distress. Founded in 1978, Enki has nine outpatient facilities across East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients undergo an evaluation to help the staff determine the most effective treatment plan customized to meet their needs. For individuals struggling with substance use disorders or trauma, the facility utilizes the Managing and Adapting Practices (MAP) to target the best treatment methods. Therapy is broken down into individual, group and family sessions as well as psychoeducational groups.
The facility utilizes a comprehensive approach that includes therapy, case management, psychological assessment and medication, crisis intervention, education and general wellness programming. By and large, Enki uses evidence-based methods like CBT and trauma-focused CBT for children and adolescents experiencing significant emotional and behavioral challenges connected to traumatic life events. In addition, Enki also offers specialized groups for parenting and substance use disorders, and case managers assist clients with health education as well as finding peer and medication support services. Since Enki primarily offers outpatient counseling and medication management, 12-step recovery is not a part of the programming.
The Enki team is comprised of clinic managers, MFTs, case managers and Master’s-level counselors as well as a psychiatrist that can provide medication management for those in need of dual diagnosis support.
Extras
Some of Enki’s locations work in collaboration with neighborhood schools to provide crisis prevention and early detection services.
Enki works with CalWORKs to help adult clients remove the mental health obstacles blocking employment and eventually to restore independence. In addition to mental health care, the facility offers career assistance and education.
