In 1997, Emmanuel House in Detroit, Michigan was established in a one-bedroom townhouse to assist veterans who were struggling with addiction. In the past 20 years, the organization has grown into the city’s largest transitional care and housing program for veterans. Emmanuel House now operates a campus that includes five apartment buildings, three townhouses and three off-site single-family homes. Emmanuel House offers a Christian faith-based program that includes sober living, peer mentoring, AA/NA meetings, life skills workshops and weekly individual and group therapy. The goal of Emmanuel House is to provide a drug free facility where men and women can began the process of re-building their lives and obtaining permanent housing.
Accommodations and Amenities
The facility has a total of 100 beds—35 for women and 65 for men. Though the specifics vary, residents typically stay in dorm-style rooms with twin or bunk beds, dressers and shared closet space. On-site laundry, a computer lab and common living areas are also available. Lengths of stay may vary but the ideal duration is six months. Unlike some transitional living programs, residents are provided three healthy meals on-site per day and snacks throughout their stay.
Rules and Regulations
To be eligible for the program, clients must be 18 years or older and agree to submit to regular and random drug tests, attend 12-step meetings and be willing to enroll in school or become gainfully employed. The facility takes residents through a program where they adjust to their new environment, attend classes, do work therapy and prepare to transition back into their lives sober. As clients progress through the program, they take on more responsibilities and are granted the freedom to go off-site for visits and family activities.
Emmanuel House offers dual diagnosis support for those with co-occurring disorders in addition to substance abuse programming. The facility is equipped to provide mental health interventions for clients who have been identified as having a severe mental health diagnosis including schizophrenia, bi-polar, major depression, PTSD and other issues. All clinical services are supervised by PhD and Master’s-level social workers.
Emmanuel House provides case management services, medical screenings and referrals as necessary.
Emmanuel House is a safe, structured and sober environment for male and female veterans in early recovery. Clients move through a program that includes a stable living environment, meals, 12-step support and on-site activities.
