Embodied Recovery is a Chapel Hill, North Carolina based eating disorder treatment facility. The treatment team here primarily employs the somato-psycho-social model as a method to shift the person’s focus to make the body a catalyst for recovery, rather than something that obstructs one’s recovery. Embodied Recovery provides both clinical and consultation services, group and individual therapy and practitioner training opportunities. Treatment consists of evidence-based protocols and sensory integration practices that are facilitated Master’s-level therapists who specialize in eating disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Embodied Recovery is for adults who are struggling with a number of eating disorders. They can either attend the program independently or come in as a referral from another outpatient program. The clinical services in office mainly consist of a 12 session clinical group that uses imagination, movement, and experiential elements within an integrated process model known as the Embodied Recovery Model. These sessions explore listening to what the body is saying as opposed to maintaining a negative narrative, how experiences inform thoughts, trust, boundaries, mindful tracking of thoughts, body and emotion and creating safety. These sessions use common therapeutic approaches within the treatment model like DBT, CBT, ACT and Internal Family Systems Therapy.
There are also consulting services mainly for clients who are referred by outpatient providers. These services can include individual therapy sessions, which are usually around an hour or so, either in person or via telehealth. There are also options for mental health professionals to create a personalized treatment plan for a client that is currently in a residential or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Embodied Recovery offers a 90 minute consultation with the treatment team over a video call where there is a collaboration resulting in integration of the Embodied Recovery Model in conjunction with intervention to current programming in order to maximize the client’s chance for success.
Embodied Recovery is run by two somatic based psychotherapists who are also certified eating disorder counselors with additional private practices within the Durham/Chapel Hill areas.
Embodied Recovery uses a unique approach to help men and women learn how to harness the thoughts and feelings surrounding their eating disorder using cutting edge treatment techniques. These methods pull from Somatic Experiencing and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy to address past experiences and bring to the surface the root of the initial urge that led to the eating disorder in the first place.
