Elpida Residential Programs Review

Located 30 minutes north of San Francisco in the city of San Rafael, Elpida Residential Programs (Elpida) is a non-profit residential treatment facility that specializes in caring for clients with a broad range of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Translated as “Hope,” Elpida offers four long-term residential homes in addition to an outpatient case management program. Founded in 1993 by family therapist Toula Silver, Elpida welcomes clients from moderate income backgrounds who do not qualify for public mental health care. While the focus is a structured home, the facility also provides a comprehensive treatment approach that combines a range of therapeutic methods including evidence-based therapies, traditional psychotherapy, the 12-step recovery method, wellness activities and medication management. It’s worth noting that the facility does not offer care for alcohol, substance use or eating disorders.

Accommodations and Food

The four Elpida houses are situated in the beautiful and affluent Marin County, located just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and home to the fifth highest income per capita in the United States. The homes are mixed-gender with mostly private rooms, and each home is conveniently close to shopping centers and restaurants, and walking distance to public transportation.

Elpida is considered a long-term treatment option but the duration of stay varies depending on the individual. While Elpida requests a six-month commitment, many clients stay several years. The houses are monitored from 9 am to 11 pm daily by case managers. While the program upholds a strict non substance use policy, clients are permitted to smoke in specific locations on the property.

Residents enjoy regular outings to the beach, museums and Golden Gate Park, and are allowed regular visits from friends and family. In addition, clients must spend two days a week either going to school, volunteering or working.

Three meals a day are provided, and residents are responsible for planning and cooking.

Treatment and Staff

The goal of Elpida is to provide a structured and nurturing environment that enables clients to lead a happy and productive life. Before entering Elpida, individuals must undergo a comprehensive evaluation to help the team determine the most effective treatment plan customized to meet their specific needs. At this time, clients are assigned a psychotherapist whom they maintain throughout the program.

The facility utilizes a multi-faceted care approach that integrates a range of evidence-based and holistic therapies in addition to psychotherapy and medication management. Clients meet with their psychotherapist once a week, engage in group therapy three times a week in addition to daily case management that is tailored to the individual. In addition, residents participate in various process groups that focus on symptom management and stress management in addition to holistic groups like yoga or expressive arts therapy that uses painting, writing and dance. Elpida also offers an array of life skills training like cooking, menu planning, grocery shopping, budgeting and medication management, as well as educational and vocational training. In addition, Elpida recognizes the value and importance of physical well-being. As such, residents exercise every weekday morning for 45 minutes.

The Elpida team is comprised of an executive and clinical director, physicians, psychotherapist, MFTs, case managers and counselors. Medication management is available.

Extras

Elpida recognizes the importance of aftercare in the success of a sustainable long-term recovery. Clients that finish the residential program are assisted with their transition by the team’s case managers.

In Summary
