Ellern Mede is a London based eating disorder and comorbidity treatment facility that provides inpatient and outpatient care for clients who are between the ages of eight and 18, and outpatient treatment for young men. The Ridgeway residential program is specifically for children and adolescents who are under the age of 18. Treatment consists of stabilization and intensive medical and behavioral programming.
Accommodations and Food
The large Ridgeway residence can accommodate up to 25 clients that are divided into different areas by age. These units have double occupancy bedrooms, dining rooms and a living room with a TV and entertainment center. The entire facility offers communal gardens, a gym, activity room, music room, library and computer room. There are also several therapy rooms for groups, families and individuals.
Healthy eating is a priority in programs like this one, and there are groups devoted to having clients learn how to grocery shop and prepare meals for themselves. They also receive instruction on how to cook for each other, and have social eating experiences. All food is provided by the facility.
Treatment and Staff
The clients in this program, all of whom are young women, receive treatment that emphasizes the importance of self esteem and recognizing destructive behaviors, all within a warm, patient and caring setting. They work on communication and social skills, and over time are exposed to experiences, like eating in a restaurant, that may have made them uncomfortable in the past.
Treatment is usually around five weeks in length and consists of daily group therapy and activities. There are several group and individual sessions per week with evidence-based approaches that include CBT and DBT, in addition to the family treatment protocols. There are healthy eating groups, over exercisers groups and future focus sessions. Additionally, there are community meetings led by clients that serve as a sounding board for each individual.
Therapeutic approaches include integrative therapy, cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) and family based therapy. There are also regular psychoeducational classes and lectures. The facility is fully equipped for clients to receive any medical treatment they may need during their stay, and is constantly monitored by medical staff.
The multidisciplinary team of clinicians are headed up by physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, dieticians, nursing staff, social workers and clinical therapists.
There are several recreational activities the clients participate in like yoga, golf, swimming, arts and crafts and movie nights out on the town. Aftercare planning is an essential element to the programming at Ellern Mede, and during their time in residential treatment, clients work with their therapists and social worker to coordinate outside agency assistance. There are also outpatient programs clients can step down to.
In addition, family treatment is a very important step to success with clients, and therapy is offered regularly.
Ellen Mede’s inpatient program at Ridgeway provides a safe and comfortable environment for young women who are suffering from eating disorders and other behavioral health concerns. Treatment is entirely individualIzed and client focused, providing alternative ways of thinking and approaching problems for their clients and families in a loving atmosphere. It’s certainly a valuable resource in the London recovery community.
