Ellern Mede Barnet Review
Opened in 2017, Ellern Mede Barnet is the brand new residential branch of the London based eating disorder clinic. The facility serves children ages eight to 18, with a special section reserved for young women up to the age of 30 that are dealing with bulimia and binge eating disorders specifically. Treatment utilizes evidence-based approaches in a family inclusive environment that’s designed to be very supportive and teach tools for continued success long term.
Accommodations and Food
The brand new therapeutic facility has only 11 beds, with four of them dedicated to the adult women. It’s close to public transportation, shops and restaurants. Clients have private, fully furnished bedrooms and enjoy modern appliances and amenities. There is a spacious garden, art room, classrooms and private meeting rooms.
The residence features a family dining room where clients and their families eat together. Meals are prepared by staff and clients as they move through the program. The meals are all very well balanced and clients learn how to grocery shop and cook alongside other residents and their loved ones. They can also expect chef prepared meals with two selections offered for every meal daily.
Treatment and Staff
The Barnet program is divided by age group, with the adolescent program, called The Dolphin Programme, which addresses general eating disorders, and the adult binge eating and bulimia program. In both cases there are clients who are higher dependency than others and need more intensive services and observation. Programs run between two and six weeks on average with the possibility of staying longer.
The programs are on a step down basis and as clients move through they are allotted more and more freedoms within the program, like day passes and weekends home. Treatment combines psychotherapy, nutritional education, medication management and monitoring and skills groups, Therapeutic approaches include CBT, mindfulness, overeating and future focus. There are also experiential and exposure therapy elements to treatment with social eating and social snacks, and clients have group outings to restaurant where they order and eat in a social setting.
Younger clients also have regular schooling with an education professional to keep them on track in school. Ellern Mede has a school facility as well where many clients attend while in intensive treatment. There are daily community meeting within each section of the facility and a weekly client lead meeting.
The staff of Ellern Mede includes psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, nurses, family and occupational therapists, art therapists and LCSWs.
Extras
Clients go out on several recreational and fun activities while in treatment like horseback riding, the gym, watch movies and TV together, have yoga, swimming, dance class, drama, golf and trips to the local farm or zoo.
Aftercare planning takes place throughout treatment, and there are outpatient programs offered at this facility.

Both age groups have thorough and comprehensive treatment planning that is personalized to the clients specific needs and there is plenty of staff to support each client during their treatment experience.
