Baker City OregonElkhorn Adolescent Treatment Center Review

Located in Baker City, Oregon, Elkhorn Adolescent Treatment Center (EATC) is operated by New Directions Northwest, an organization that was established in 1983. New Directions offers developmental disability, mental health and substance abuse treatment services. Founded in the early 1990s, EATC provides residential care for those aged 13 to 18 years old who are struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. On-site secondary education is also provided for the residents, so they can begin recovery without falling behind in life.

Accommodations and Food

EATC is a large building which accommodates a total of 24 clients. Males and females are separated in two wings, with 12 in each. Bedrooms are double-ocupancy, with one large bathroom in each of the units. There are three main group rooms, a family visiting room and kitchen. The dining area is a part of the main living room area. Although this rehab is not a lockdown facility, there is an extensive camera and alarm system for the safety and security of clients. All meals are included and dietary restrictions and food allergies can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

The minimum length of stay at EATC is 90 days, although the residents are encouraged to stay longer. Services include individualized treatment planning, daily group therapy and two individual sessions weekly. Group therapy is CBT based and focuses on the clients making healthy decisions moving forward. Many of the residents receive medication in conjunction with regular therapy and meet weekly with their psychiatrist who monitors their progress. Relapse prevention, coping and life skills, and 12-step principles are touched on every day, daily journaling and exercise or recreational activities. There are also scheduled hours for clients to do homework every day so they don’t fall behind in their studies. The staff includes LCSWs, RNs, CADCs, medical doctors and caseworkers.

Extras

EATC is known for providing activities that incorporate team building and social learning. Some of the recreational options include, hiking, camping, sledding, volleyball, basketball, baseball, fishing, swimming and picnics. Many activities are built around practicing social skills and effective communication. Residents are also taken to a local gym where they focus on physical health as a positive outlet for leisure time. They are also expected to participate in local service projects to learn how to give back and to be a part of community living.

In Summary

Elkhorn Adolescent Treatment Center has the backing of and experience of an established organization. The array of its specialized services for adolescents is comparable with any other residential substance abuse treatment center, though its facilities may be somewhat more modest. Still, EATC offers its services regardless of a client’s ability to pay. Most clients are on Oregon Health Plan, a sliding fee scale is provided based on income and most insurance accepted.
