Elizabeth Layton Center Review
Named after the celebrated Kansan artist who channeled her own battles with mental illness into her famed drawings, the Elizabeth Layton Center is a community mental health facility that also offers outpatient substance abuse services serving both Franklin and Miami County, Kansas. The facility maintains two locations in the city of Ottawa—one for outpatient and children’s services and one for community support services—and two corresponding facilities in Paola, located about a half-hour drive away.
Treatment and Staff
Given that it is not an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), clients attend treatment sessions at either of the Elizabeth Layton Center locations for less than six total hours a week. This typically means attending one hour-long CBT-based group therapy session and one individual therapy session each week led by CSACs. The typical duration of outpatient programs is eight weeks, though clients can adapt these programs to meet their individual needs. Clients can incorporate a family program into their treatment as well as tailor their program to meet certain court mandates.
Given that the Elizabeth Layton Center is first and foremost a facility dedicated to mental health issues, there is dual diagnosis care offered in conjunction with the substance abuse program. Clients have access to a nurse practitioner who provides medication management, and they can also schedule special sessions with a therapist who specializes in mental health issues. These sessions focus on building communication skills, crisis resolution, problem solving and stress management. While there is a psychiatrist on-staff, they specialize primarily in adolescent services. There are no detox services offered at the Elizabeth Layton Center, though clients can receive referrals to a local facility whenever necessary.

Overall, the Elizabeth Layton Center offers basic outpatient care for substance abuse, though it’s focus is primarily on mental health. Regardless, the program is affordable and boasts a solid support staff who can provide care to those with co-occurring disorders. Clients also have the ability to choose their sessions and classes between each of Elizabeth Layton’s locations. In all, this facility is a strong and affordable resource for those in the area.
