Elizabeth L. Sturz Outpatient Treatment Center Review
The Elizabeth L. Sturz (E.L.S) Outpatient Treatment Center was founded in 1967 in the Bronx borough of New York City. E.L.S is an outpatient offering from the Argus Community, a substance abuse organization with a number of different programs in the greater New York area. E.L.S. offers an adult Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as an adolescent outpatient program.
Treatment and Staff
The intake process at E.L.S begins with a phone assessment with an intake coordinator to determine if the potential client’s particular issues will be a properly served in the facility. If they decide to move forward, the individual is then brought in for a more formal assessment to determine the intensity and length of his or her program. If the counselors determine the person might be in need of a higher level of treatment, he or she is referred to Argus Community’s Striver House residential program and/or any necessary outside detox.
E.L.S’s IOP lasts from six to 12 months depending on the needs of the client. During this program, clients meet every day Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. The program consists of both individual and group therapy. The group meetings are never larger than 16 clients and consist of CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), recovery skills and relapse prevention. E.L.S also offers specialty groups including domestic violence, parenting skills and anger management. The program does not utilize the 12 steps and does not require clients to attend outside AA or NA meetings. Individual meetings are held on an as-needed basis.
E.L.S. is also dual-diagnosis and the program has a doctor on-site who helps address co-occurring disorders. While in the program, clients are regularly breathalyzed and drug tested.
E.L.S also offers an adolescent outpatient program for clients of ages 13 to 18. This program meets for a group meeting once a day in the afternoon for an hour. The adolescent program also offers GED preparation services from certified teachers.
Both the adult and adolescent programs have a variety of CSACs and addiction counselors.
Extras
Although E.L.S. does not have an official family program, the facility does offer family intervention services. There is also no official aftercare program either but continuing care and referral to outpatient programs can be provided. E.L.S. also provides breakfast and lunch for clients in the adult IOP program.
In Summary
The Elizabeth L. Sturz Outpatient Treatment Center is an affordable IOP option for clients who might need something more flexible than an inpatient track. The length of the program allows for clients to have plenty of time to adjust to sobriety and hopefully garner a stable sense of healing before being discharged. Additionally, the adolescent program’s inclusion of GED preparation is an added bonus for young people who might need a second chance at completing their high school education.
