The Basics
Based in Nashville, Tennessee, interventionist Elizabeth “Lizzy” Harrigan is a psychotherapist and Master’s-level LCSW who provides individual and group therapy and alcohol and drug intervention services under her private practice, Artistry of the Spirit. She also works as an assessment specialist for Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Harrigan received her Bachelor’s in social work from Belmont University, followed by her Master’s from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The Background
Harrigan established her own practice in the Nashville area in June of 2015. Her past professional positions have included drug treatment programs, intensive trauma centers, inpatient psychiatric settings, municipal government, research and public defense. She was a case manager and intervention coordinator for Intervention 911 prior to opening her private practice. Additionally, she is a professor, speaker and equine therapist. Harrigan is also in recovery and utilizes her past experiences to help clients.
The Approach
The intervention process includes working closely with families. This can include providing individual and group therapy for those who feel that they need to learn more about their role in the addiction process, as well as work on codependency issues.
Harrigan’s interventions are based on a motivational approach. The family and friends are involved in the process, and aim to provide a strong foundation of support for the client. Typically, the process takes about three days with additional counseling services available for as long as needed—sometimes even a year. Assistance with finding an appropriate level of care including detox is provided. If a relapse occurs, an alternative treatment plan can be implemented.
In Summary
Aftercare and other services are coordinated to suit the client’s needs. Counseling referrals and recommendations for family support, including Alanon meetings, are provided. Harrigan is a professional whose experience indicates she is passionate about people, social work, learning and personal growth.
