Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute Review

With seven facilities located in Akron, Ohio and surrounding communities, Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute is a hospital which offers a range of rehabilitative services. As a part of Akron General Health System, an Ohio institution for over 100 years (which includes the Akron General Medical Center), Edwin Shaw focuses primarily on brain traumas, spinal cord injuries, amputations and related physical ailments.

The facility also has an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for chemical dependency, however, on their main campus in Cuyahoga Falls (just north of Akron). While Edwin Shaw can provide some support for co-occurring disorders in individual and group sessions, the facility is not officially a dual diagnosis program.

Treatment and Staff

There is no medical detox offered at Edwin Shaw, though the facility does offer local referrals to those who need them. Since many clients enroll at Edwin Shaw right after detox, the facility is equipped to administer and monitor their Suboxone intake during this transitional period. Those on Suboxone are put in their own program track which is typically six months long, during which they slowly taper off of the drug.

Edwin Shaw’s IOP clientele attend group therapy several times a week and individual therapy between once and three times a week. Schedules are arranged to meet either Monday, Wednesday and Saturday or on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Though program length varies, the IOP track typically lasts four weeks. Depending on their schedules, clients can attend either morning or evening groups on the days mentioned above.

Treatment mostly consists of CBT and groups that focus on analyzing past behaviors, educating about substance abuse and helping clients develop relapse prevention plans. Clients are also introduced to the 12-step, and are required to attend at least one on or off-site meeting a week throughout the course of their program. Edwin Shaw encourages clients to attend additional off-site meetings throughout treatment as well, though these aren’t required.

Though group sessions can run high with up to 20 clients at a time, in these cases Edwin Shaw makes sure to have at least two therapists running these groups. Smoking is permitted during breaks, and random drug tests occur throughout treatment.

Applicable staff for Edwin Shaw’s IOP are comprised of registered nurses and Master’s-level therapists, though some of the staff are still in the process of obtaining these degrees (though only the former lead group and individual sessions). Each client is also assigned a medical doctor to work with upon intake, though they are independently contracted and thus bill separately. While there are no psychiatrists on staff, the facility can assist clients in setting up appointments when necessary.

For those who have physical disabilities (with or without concomitant substance abuse issues), there are also a range of certified recreational, occupational, physical and speech therapists available, among other specialized counselors.

Extras

One special offering at Edwin Shaw is their Challenge Golf program led by Don Tristano, who is a PGA professional. The program as a way to release stress, build confidence and develop coordination again after serious injury (though this bonus caters more towards those recovering from physical ailments).

Following their outpatient program, Edwin Shaw also provides six to eight weeks of aftercare comprised of one two-hour session a week. Finally, the facility sets aside time on Saturdays for family therapy whenever necessary or requested.

In Summary

Much of Edwin Shaw Rehabilitation Institute’s appeal will likely come from the trust engendered by their parent company Akron General. Because of this affiliation, Edwin Shaw has access to an impressive array of medical staff, with support for virtually every physical ailment one could think of. While prospective clients seeking treatment purely for addiction may find the program fairly standard, those in need of a hospital-style program with extensive support for disabilities (with or without treatment for substance abuse) should find this a near-perfect fit.
