Located in Bedford, Massachusetts, Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital is an expansive behavioral health hospital with a full range of medical and psychiatric programs. For clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders, the facility provides an outpatient day treatment program for veterans which can also house residents for up to 14 days. The hospital is owned and operated through the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Accommodations and Food

There are 40 beds available for clients who choose to stay on-site for the initial portion of the program. Both shared and private rooms with twin beds, storage space and basic decor are available and there are common areas with cable TV, outdoor walking paths, laundry facilities and a cafeteria. Throughout their stay, residents are served three well-balanced meals a day.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, all incoming clients go through an initial intake and assessment to help staff members develop their treatment plans. Those in need of detox can do so on-site before continuing on to therapy. Though treatment protocols may vary, all participants attend both individual and group therapy with evidence-based practices including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Dual diagnosis support is available as well, including medication management. Programs are designed specifically with veterans’ needs in mind; this means that there’s an emphasis on life and vocational skills, trauma-informed care and addiction education. Throughout the program, all clients are also required to attend regular 12-step meetings.

The staff at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital consists of MDs, RNs, psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, LPCs and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

The facility offers a standalone mental health counseling as well as a range of services specifically for geriatric clients. It also offers a shorter program—16 hours for relapse preventiondesigned as a refresher course for between day treatment and aftercare.
