Edgefield Recovery CenterThe Basics

Opened in 2009, Edgefield Recovery Center is an economical 12-step focused rehab in Cheneyville, a small town in the southern part of Louisiana. Edgefield’s philosophy is to provide an inclusive treatment approach in which clients and staff share the responsibility of managing their sober community.

Accommodations and Food

Treatment and housing happen in the same place at Edgefield. The facility is housed in an antebellum style mansion surrounded by oak trees and a 10-acre pecan grove next to Bayou Boeuf. Clients sleep in one of 30 twin-sized beds, sharing rooms and bathrooms with up to four people. Both the rooms and the house are well appointed, with chandeliers and hardwood floors, and everyone has their own nightstand, lamp and closet. There is a large flat screen TV in the family room for down time, and outside, lush green plants surround a deck full of rocking chairs. To complete the vintage Southern feel, tobacco products are allowed in designated areas.

Edgefield offers three meals a day prepared by a nutritionist, and dietary requests are accommodated when possible. Snacks and drinks are also made available throughout the schedule. Not getting the treats you want? After the first week, clients can purchase their own items on one of their many trips into town.

Treatment and Staff

The 30-day minimum residential treatment at Edgefield follows a therapeutic community model wherein the clients, within structured guidelines, assist the staff in managing the day-to-day operations.

The staff includes an addictionologist, a psychiatrist and a psychologist, as well as licensed therapists, social workers and counselors, a CSAC nurse practitioner, RNs and LPNs. Edgefield offers both group and five individual therapy sessions a week, as well as addiction education courses, dual diagnosis support, sub-acute medical detox, Big Book study and on and off-site AA meetings. Clients are required to attend all AA meetings and are highly recommended to get sponsors.

Treatment is organized into phases, involving the assignment of 12-step work, a self-assessment and life story exercise, writing a relapse prevention plan and developing a symptom management plan. Individual therapy encompasses self-esteem issues, co-occurring diagnosis, trauma and treatment planning, while group sessions are gender specific and include relapse prevention, spirituality and addiction education.

The schedule at Edgefield is simple; wake up at 6 am for breakfast at 7, help clean up and then go to therapy sessions and classes until a noon lunch. After lunch are more therapy sessions and then a compulsory exercise period with dinner at 6 pm followed by AA and free time. Clients assist with meals and household chores. Weekends are less structured and include family programming, approved visitation and supervised extracurricular activities.

The family program consists of educational therapy services on Saturday mornings that are designed to assist families by addressing addiction and relapse prevention. There are also individual family sessions on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. Clients are not allowed to contact family for the first seven days of treatment, but following this initial period, the house phone is available for 10 minutes every day between 5 and 10 pm. Cell phones are not allowed. Visitation hours are 1:30 to 4 pm on Sundays after the first week in residence and the client must submit a list of the friends and family planning on attending for staff approval.

Extras

Clients receive the benefit of a weekly personal training session, an on-site weight room, access to the grounds for exercise and a nutritionist who prepares the meals. Edgefield also offers monthly bowling and movie trips into town.

In Summary

Clients learn to be a functioning and vital part of the community at Edgefield, though this also means personal privacy is compromised. With a comprehensive family program, an emphasis on healthy living and its extensive grounds, Edgefield is a well-priced option for those looking for recovery with Southern hospitality.

  1. Above description of facility and services are BS—step daughter was continually harassed and cursed by a tech who has a reputation for abusing clients—she in returne cursed the tech—figured she was going to get kicked out and asked to call to be picked up—they told her no you are doing good and need the help—next morning – they kicked her out—there were witnesses that back her story but were ignored- they protected the tech—it seems to be a scam—if they would let her go when she wanted they would not have been paid for the balance—the next day they got paid entire amount —they lied to her to get more money—they say they treat anger-not so—tech has major anger issues and would have kept daughter to teach her how to cope with the inadequate tech—-the tech may be part of the scam—harass a client , they respond and then you kick them out to make room for another sucker—money making scam/-getting with the state and Medicare to investigate this place—only saw 3-4 people that had a proper education—no psychologist or psychologist—I have a masters in clinical psychology and I was surprised at some of staff behavior I observed

  2. This is a complete lie! Do not have on sight weight room, and unless MS. Lucy went back to school she is only a cook. Not to mention the entire staff is always arguing. This place was a money mmaking racket with the rudist Secretary I’ve every met. do not go here.
