Located in the Overland Park neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, EDCare is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of men and women struggling with an array of eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia and compulsive eating as well as co-occurring mental illnesses. This Joint Commission-accredited facility was opened in 2014 as EDCare’s first venture outside of the state of Colorado, where two EDCare locations exist in Denver and Colorado Springs. EDCare Kansas City employs a mind-body-spirit philosophy that treats the “whole person” rather than merely fixing symptoms. Through comprehensive, individualized programming rooted in evidence-based therapies, clients are given the tools to achieve a sustainable, long-term recovery. The facility offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and a transitional Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). While the treatment approach includes a number of therapeutic methods including experiential and holistic, the 12-step recovery model is not a component of the programming.
Treatment and Staff
EDCare Kansas City offers a comprehensive PHP customized to the specific needs of the client. PHP is often ideal for clients that either cannot commit to residential treatment, or for individuals transitioning back into regular life following completion of an inpatient program. In PHP, clients are able to receive consistent therapy without disrupting school, work or their home life. Unlike an inpatient program, clients can incorporate new skills into their daily life while still in treatment.
The facility offers treatment for a range of complex eating disorders like binge eating and restrictive food intake disorder as well as program tracks for co-occurring trauma, binge eating disorders and elite athletes. Clients entering PHP care first meet with a treatment team for a complete assessment. This evaluation includes a medical exam, nutritional history and a psychological and psychiatric assessment. The test results help dictate how the EDCare team tailors the individual’s programming.
The facility employs a mindfulness approach called CAMSA that focuses on five concepts: connection, acceptance, mindfulness, sense of self and action. To this end, PHP integrates a host of therapeutic approaches including individual and group therapy, multi-family therapy and process groups, all rooted in a combination of holistic, experiential and evidence-based methods. Clients engage in weekly psychiatric consults, biweekly sessions with a primary therapist as well as daily process groups that cover body image, the disease of addiction, trauma, a balanced life and sex. The facility also offers psychodrama, art therapy and yoga. EDCare believes sound nutrition plays an integral role in recovery; as such, individuals eat three meals a day with a therapist, participate in a weekly cooking group and dine out.
The multidisciplinary EDCare team is comprised of MFTs, primary therapists, physicians, psychiatrists, registered nurses, dietitians, a chef, expressive arts therapists and milieu therapists. With an on-site physician and psychiatrist, medication management is available for clients with co-occurring disorders in need of dual diagnosis support.
For clients without a nearby residence, EDCare offers upscale accommodations approximately one mile from the facility. Community is an integral component to the living situation, and the home gives clients the opportunity to hone the techniques they learn in treatment with the support of their peers.
Situated in Kansas City, EDCare is an outpatient treatment facility that provides comprehensive care for men and women struggling with complex eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. The facility offers a multifaceted “client centered” approach to care that synchronizes several therapeutic methods including evidence-based practices, holistic and experiential therapies, nutritional counseling and medication management. For clients seeking an experienced, compassionate team and a comprehensive, individualized IOP rooted in evidence-based practices and nutrition therapy, EDCare is an excellent option.
