Ed Storti, InterventionistThe Basics

Based in San Pedro, California, Ed Storti has conducted more than 3,500 interventions over the course of four decades. Besides being considered a pioneering intervention specialist, Storti is a CADC and the author of several books on addiction and recovery. He works closely with several treatment centers, serving alcoholics, addicts, compulsive gamblers and those with eating disorders. His affiliates include Hotel California by the SeaSerenity Lodge, House of Hope and New Found Life, just to name a few. Approximately 95% of Storti’s clients go right into treatment after an intervention.

The Background

Ed Storti founded his private practice, Ed Storti LLC, in 1973. Prior to becoming an interventionist, he worked in the Port of Los Angeles as a longshoreman. He’s a member of the Association of Intervention Specialists, an organization dedicated to setting standards and educating professional in the intervention field.

The Approach

During interventions, Storti utilizes his own method, The Storti Model. The Storti Model operates on the belief that a client does not have to hit rock bottom to get help. He suggests waiting until an addicted individual bottoms out might be too late. The key behind the Storti Model is motivational intervention. The intervention specialist acts more as a force of positive energy than a background character. The intervention focuses on the client’s positive attributes, and does not condemn them.

During the assessment, Storti delves into the client’s history, level of chemical dependency and potential behavioral issues. Those who are prone to violent behavior, are mentally unstable or don’t appear to have enough documentation supporting a probable substance addiction problem are not good candidates for an intervention.

The length of time Stori dedicates to the client and their family is typically between 12 and 24 hours. The final preparation is done the afternoon prior to the intervention, and the intervention itself is usually done under an hour, but Storti asks for a time commitment which ranges between two and three hours. Storti helps the family find the appropriate detox or residential treatment facility. He maintains relationships with many different facilities because he believes matching the client with the right type of therapeutic approach is vital to their success in treatment. Additionally, Storti will often facilitate a tour of the rehab for families prior to the intervention, to ensure that it is an appropriate fit.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Other services Storti offers besides intervention include case management, referrals for ongoing support for the family and help to find appropriate aftercare. Storti is considered by many to be an innovator in the field. His belief that a client need not hit rock bottom before they get treatment, has helped him save many lives.
