Located in Bakersfield, California, Ebony Counseling Center has been providing outpatient services since 1973. In addition to offering child and family therapy, this center specializes in outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) substance-abuse programs for low-income and indigent individuals seeking treatment.
Treatment and Staff
Ebony Counseling Center offers post-detox traditional outpatient and IOP. Treatment includes group and individual therapy and the Matrix Model as core recovery methods, with CBT used independently as needed. All meetings are gender-specific and held during the evening, allowing clients to maintain employment. Attendance frequency depends on the individual.
After an initial assessment to determine the best track of recovery, clients are placed in one of four levels of treatment: Level One is a six month program which includes weekly group meetings and monthly individual sessions. Level Two is a two-to-three month “pre-treatment” program, and Level Three a six month outpatient program. Clients requiring Level Four treatment will attend an eight month IOP with group meetings three times a week—Monday through Thursday—and an individual session once a week.
Treatment is not 12-step oriented, but clients are required to attend off-site NA/AA meetings in order to successfully complete treatment, with sponsorship encouraged but not mandatory. Clients who deal with trauma either tackle their issues during one-on-one therapy or they are referred to an outside care giver. Ebony does not offer dual diagnosis support, but will refer clients to outside help as needed.
Aside from bi-weekly visits from a contracted MD, Ebony Center employs 10 CADCs with a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-12, with an even mix of men and women.
Ebony’s family strengthening program—”Collateral”— invites loved ones to join clients in group counseling sessions which are scheduled as needed.
Ebony offers children’s art therapy which includes activities like painting and coloring, and adult clients are referred to a local community center for alternative therapies. A schedule and pamphlet is provided for programs such as fencing, crochet and piano instruction.
Ebony Counseling Center prides itself on their professionally trained staff who are committed to each client’s success. Ebony’s personnel will go to any lengths to find extra outside support for those requiring additional programs and treatment. The outpatient program and IOP are free for clients with MediCal, making this an ideal choice for indigent or low-income individuals.
