Easter Seals MichiganEaster Seals Michigan Review

Easter Seals Michigan was founded in 1920 in Oakland County, Michigan, a county in the southeastern region of the state and home to Oakland University. The organization operates outpatient treatment programs in several locations throughout the area including Pontiac, Auburn Hills and Southfield.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment process at Easter Seals begins with a phone screening with an intake coordinator to determine if the client would be a good fit for the program. The next step is an in-person informational meeting where a counselor helps determine the intensity and duration of the client’s program. If the prospective client is deemed in need of a higher level of care, he or she is referred to an outside residential or detox program.

Easter Seals outpatient program falls under the Oakland County Substance Abuse Services which provides low-cost and free treatment for residents in the Oakland County area who have Medicaid insurance or do not have any type of insurance at all.

When clients enter the outpatient program, they are assigned to a case manager who oversees their progress throughout treatment. The length of the outpatient program is based around the needs of the clients and the average stay is between three to six months. The program at Easter Seals consists of both group and individual therapy. The group sizes range from four to up to 20 clients. The counselors use a variety of different treatment techniques in the groups including CBT and relapse prevention. Clients also meet regularly with their case manager while in the program.

Although the Easter Seals is not 12-step oriented, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA and NA meetings in the community.

Easter Seals is dual-diagnosis and has psychiatrists on staff who meet with clients with potential co-occurring disorders.

The staff consists of a mixture of licensed clinicians and certified peer support workers.

Extras

Easter Seals offers individual family meetings with the client and their family members. Clients must however sign a release form before outside family members can be brought into their treatment process.

Although Easter Seals does not have an official aftercare program, it does place a great deal of focus on assisting clients with transitioning back into the community and attending local support groups.

In Summary

Easter Seals Michigan offers affordable and individualized outpatient treatment services to adult clients in the Oakland County area. The small group size offers clients the ability to receive individualized attention and focus from the counselors. The on-staff psychiatrist provides clients with co-occurring disorders a high level of support. Also, the OSAF program allows clients from all economic backgrounds the opportunity to receive treatment at Easter Seals.
