East Central Behavioral Health Review
East Central Behavioral Health (ECBH) in South Dakota offers an outpatient substance abuse program for adults and adolescents. The non-profit behavioral health center was founded in 1971 and provides psychoeducational, group and community support for individuals and their families affected by addiction. ECBH has provided comprehensive mental health services for residents in Brookings County and the surrounding areas for over twenty years.
Treatment and Staff
The first step in treatment is an assessment by an ECBH clinician. If a client meets the criteria for substance abuse treatment, they are assigned to a primary therapist. Individuals with co-occurring disorders will see the on-site staff psychiatrist twice per month for medication management.
The outpatient program for adults is typically four to six weeks in duration and a commitment of seven hours per week. Clients undergo individual therapy once per week and group sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 8 pm. Treatment utilizes CBT and topics include identifying triggers, a co-occurring disorders group, gender specific groups, managing stress, coping skills and small group communication. Groups are limited to 10 people. Clients are not required to attend outside support groups such as AA/NA, but building a support network is highly encouraged.
While ECBH does not have an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), individuals who require more intensive treatment can increase the length of their treatment and request more individual therapy sessions.
The adolescent program is for young people 17 and under. Once the client is assessed, he or she is assigned a primary therapist with whom they meet twice a week. The adolescent program differs slightly from the adult outpatient track—rather than group sessions, the therapist facilitates a family program either at the ECBH offices or in the home. Sessions may also be conducted at school sites if necessary. As with the adult outpatient program, duration is typically six weeks and outside support services are recommended.
The ECBH clinical team consists of MFTs, psychiatrists, psychologists, Physicians Assistants, LCSWs and CDACs.
Extras
Aftercare services are available for those who have completed the outpatient program. This track is six months in duration and clients meet once a week for group sessions on Tuesdays from either 5 to 6 pm or from 6 to 7 pm. Individual therapy is also available.

ECBH provides comprehensive mental health treatment for adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. While there is no IOP, extended services are provided for clients who require more intensive treatment.
