East Alabama Mental Health Center Review
The East Alabama Mental Health Center offers treatment for co-occurring disorders to those residing in four eastern Alabama counties—Lee, Russell, Chambers and Tallapoosa. The organization offers substance abuse treatment to adults through an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that consists of small group therapy sessions held on a weekly basis.
Treatment and Staff
The process at EAMHC begins with a thorough assessment conducted by a licensed therapist. With the results of the assessment, staff create individualized treatment plans that vary in length depending on each client’s circumstances. Most clients are encouraged to commit to at least 30 days in the program. Dual diagnosis issues are addressed during group therapy sessions, though for more severe cases individual therapy is also available. EAMHC does not offer an on-site detox but referrals can be made to outside facilities upon request.
Clients are required to attend three group therapy sessions a week that are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday during the afternoons and evenings. Meeting times are also available in the morning and evening on weekends when necessary. All of these sessions last three hours, with group sizes generally between 15 and 20 clients.
Therapy consists mostly of CBT and DBT. The therapist teaches clients about the dangers of substance abuse, as well as about the disease model of addiction. Other topics discussed during sessions include anger management, relapse prevention, trauma, communication skills, employment and coping skills.
The staff consists of licensed therapists, all of whom have either Master’s or doctoral degrees.

East Alabama Mental Health Center takes a primarily group-oriented approach to addiction and mental health, though one-on-one time can be made available. Though it does not offer much beyond the most basic therapies, the facility focuses on creating an interactive, educational environment for adults in early recovery.
