Drake Institute of Behavioral Medicine Review

The Drake Institute of Behavioral Medicine was founded in 1980 in Irvine, California, to offer drug free treatment solutions for those dealing with ADD, ADHD and Autism. Dr. David Velkoff is the co-founder of the facility who oversees the evaluation and treatment programs at the institute. With locations in Irvine and the the San Fernando Valley LA suburb of Northridge, programming includes brain mapping and neurofeedback to treat a number of behavioral health issues like depression, anxiety and chemical dependency.

Treatment and Staff

For the most part adolescents are the ones who receive treatment at Drake Institute, though there are some adult clients. There are several different programs offered at the facility, most of which are between three to six days of treatment a week depending on the client’s specific needs. There is also an accelerated program, which was originally designed for clients who were coming from out of town for younger clients to receive treatment during their summer break from school. This track would typically last about six weeks for ADHD clients and eight weeks for those on the Autism spectrum.

Clients initially undergo a brain mapping session to determine if there are parts of the brain that are underperforming based on 19 different sensors that are placed on the clients head to record activity. From there an individualized treatment plan is implemented that determines how many neurofeedback sessions the individual should expect before seeing a significant change in focus, mood and stress levels.

On average clients attend between 32 and 40 hour-long sessions in total, starting with about four meetings per week to start and eventually stepping down to one or two. All treatments are painless and drug free. Clients who come to Drake currently on medications are typically able to stop using them all together after two to four months of treatment.

Part of treatment at Drake is connecting with the clients loved ones and school to have a cohesive program experience, along with offering group sessions, behavior modification therapy, psychoeducation, stress and conflict reduction classes and life skills.

Besides Dr. Velkoff, staff consists of neuropsychologists, Certified Neurophysical Therapists (NPTs) and Master’s-level therapists.

Extras

Aftercare can consist of follow up sessions for up to a year.
