fargo north dakotaDrake Counseling Center Review

Founded in 1992 and based in Fargo, North Dakota, Drake Counseling Services offers treatment for substance abuse, chemical dependency and mental health issues to adults and adolescents. Since its inception, the organization has expanded to include three additional locations, one in Grand Forks, North Dakota and two in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. At the main facility in Fargo, Drake Counseling Services offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) as well as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults. Drake also has an adolescent residential facility in Detroit Lakes that emphasizes structured recovery and development of life-skills, preparing young people for fulfilling lives of sobriety.

Accommodations and Food

Drake’s residential program is housed in a small, 10-bed co-ed facility for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. Situated on six acres of land in the small city of Detroit Lakes, the facility is a large residential house with six rooms in total. Residents typically have one roommate in dorm-style rooms that come furnished with twin beds and basic furnishings. There are shared, gender-specific bathrooms. Clients can expect three hot meals a day served in the house dining room, all prepared by the facility’s cook.

Treatment and Staff

Adolescent residential clients have busy days filled with group and individual therapy sessions led by LADCs. Residents also continue their school work, with three educational sessions each day led by a Detroit Lakes community school teacher who travels to the facility. Other daily activities include a music therapy class and Pilates instruction. Drake Counseling Services also takes advantage of its sprawling campus, with recreational activities including hiking and swimming on-site. Clients can also be escorted into town for occasional day-trips. While each client’s treatment path is different, Drake’s residential program is typically no shorter than 45 days.

Adults in need of recovery services have a range of outpatient options. Clients participating in PHP at the Fargo location can expect a busy week of group and individual sessions scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 am to noon, with evening meeting times also available. In all, clients meet for 20 hours a week of treatment.

Typically Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are solely dedicated to group sessions and clients can schedule individual appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Drake endeavors to keep group sessions small, with no more than 12 clients in attendance at a time. Therapy utilizes CBT and there is no 12-step component to treatment sessions, though Drake does encourage clients to attend local AA/NA meetings. Group sessions are led by Master’s-level licensed addiction counselors and the facility’s main counselor has over 14 years of experience in the field. Special family sessions are also available.

After two to four weeks in PHP, clients transition into IOP which consists of similar sessions three days a week. Drake does offer dual diagnosis support and has a psychiatrist on staff who is available for individual sessions, though there is no medication management provided. There is no medical doctor on staff nor is detox provided.

Extras

In addition to PHP and IOP at the Fargo location, Drake offers a host of other services at each of its three outpatient facilities including evaluations, drug screens and DUI classes for those who need to meet court-mandated requirements.

Drake also offers an aftercare program in the form of one group session a week at the facility. These sessions are solely dedicated to providing relapse prevention techniques.

In Summary

Given its multiple locations and varied program options, Drake Counseling Services offers comprehensive recovery plans for every age group and stage of recovery. Adolescents can expect intensive long-term inpatient care with structured days preparing them for life beyond treatment. Adults enrolled in outpatient care are given customized paths tailored to individual needs.
