Dr. Karen ZazzeraThe Basics

Based in Scottsdale, Arizona, Dr. Karen Zazzera is the founder and head counselor of Scottsdale Intervention and Counseling. She holds a Doctor of Behavioral Health degree from Arizona State University, is an LPC in the state of Arizona, a trained EMDR therapist, a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), a Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) and an internationally Board Registered Interventionist. Dr. Zazzera offers counseling to individual clients, as well as couples and families who are dealing with a variety of issues. Her intervention expertise may be used for those dependent on alcohol, drugs, sex, love and relationships, gambling and internet gaming, or those with eating disorders, co-dependency issues, mental illness and other behavioral health concerns.

The Background

Dr. Zazzera has been a substance abuse treatment professional since 1995. She was inspired to help others when her own recovery from alcohol and drug use began in July of 1994. Over the past two decades, she has worked in inpatientoutpatient and private practice treatment settings.

The Approach

Dr. Zazzera offers three different approaches to intervention. On-site intervention is offered at one flat-fee cost while distant intervention, where Dr. Zazzera travels to the party in need, has a different price including travel expenses. The third method is a family facilitated intervention with professional consultation. This service is somewhat unique and sets Scottsdale Intervention and Counseling and Dr. Zazzera apart from similar providers. The family intervention team is educated, coached and prepared to conduct the intervention on their own by the professional interventionist but the interventionist herself is not present on the day when the team meets with the affected party.

Whichever method may be used, Dr. Zazzera sets up an initial 90-minute meeting during which clients may interview her while she completes an assessment of their situation. This meeting can be held at the Scottsdale office or over the phone. Following the initial meeting, two three-hour preparatory sessions take place (either on-site, over the phone or video chat or using a combination of both). These sessions are used to choose the best possible treatment goals and options, taking into account clinical and financial resources available.

The intervention itself can last from an hour to several. In addition to the face-to-face group meeting of the intervention itself, Dr. Zazzera keeps in contact with clients by phone and e-mail as they prepare for the intervention. In situations where expedited action is necessary, Dr. Karen Zazzera can facilitate an intervention in as quickly as 24 hours.

Depending on the situation, Dr. Zazzera’s technique includes using recovery coaches during and following an intervention and treatment to provide one-on-one support for family members and the party for whom the intervention is put together.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Aftercare options include relapse prevention therapy, assistance and support while integrating back into family and referrals to local 12-step meetings, as well as financial and budgeting assistance. Dr. Zazzera and Scottsdale Intervention and Counseling do not accept insurance, all services must be paid privately.
