Dr. Howard KornfeldThe Basics

Based out of Mill Valley, California, Dr. Howard Kornfeld is a licensed physician who has worked in the field of addiction for over 25 years. Board certified in pain, addiction and emergency medicine, Dr. Kornfeld is the founder and director of Recovery Without Walls, a high-end outpatient treatment program for chemical dependency and pain management. He also holds several titles and academic credentials: he is the founding medical director at the Alameda County Medical Center, Pain Management and Functional Restoration Clinic; a teacher at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine’s Pain Medical Fellowship Program; a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and he also maintains his own private practice in Marin County.

History

As an honors graduate from Northwestern University School of Medicine, Dr. Kornfeld entered into the field of addiction in 1988 following the completion of a Substance Abuse Fellowship at San Francisco VA Medical Center. Since then, Dr. Kornfeld has become a leader in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), the utilization of the opioid pain medication Suboxone for the treatment of heroin, Oxycontin and other opiate-based addictions. He is also well known for treating acute benzodiazepine (Valium, Xanax, Klonopin) and sleeping pill (Ambien, Lunesta) addictions.

In 2006, Dr. Kornfeld founded Recovery Without Walls, an outpatient program that offers evidence-based treatment combined with holistic practices—such as nutritional coaching, meditation and acupuncture—designed to treat the whole person (mind, body and spirit) and not just the physical aspects of chemical dependency.

Clientele

Through his vast professional network, Dr. Kornfeld treats a wide range of clients who are open to MAT. While his private practice and the program at Recovery Without Walls may attract a higher income demographic, Dr. Kornfeld also works with the area’s most at-risk clientele through his position at the Alameda County Medical Center, Pain Management and Functional Restoration Clinic.

Protocol

With an overall goal of encouraging people to seek recovery without the fear of overwhelming withdrawal symptoms, Dr. Kornfeld is a pioneer in the administration of Suboxone (also known as buprenorphine) for chronic pain and opiate addiction. So while he doesn’t limit his work to any singular approach, clients who are struggling with these issues are likely to begin MAT after completing their initial assessment. Depending on the venue in which he is seeing them, clients may also have an individualized treatment plan developed for them—including therapy, meal plans, exercise plans, supplements, massage therapy and other holistic practices. Alternately, these clients may work with Dr. Kornfeld to find a solution where other forms of treatment have failed them or where there is a medical need for pain management.

Treatment and Recommendations

Since Recovery Without Walls was created to provide supplemental services based on the philosophies of his private practice, Dr. Kornfeld’s private clients are often referred to the facility if it is determined that more comprehensive care is needed. Each client is given an individualized treatment plan geared to meet their specific needs for recovery as well life—with schedules developed around work, social and family obligations.

Though Recovery Without Walls is an outpatient facility, those who want more active supervision during detox can be accommodated by a local boutique hotel or private residence and medical staff will be provided. After this initial phase, clients begin individual and group therapy, acupuncture, nutritional coaching and any additional holistic modalities as recommended. In addition, all clients of Dr. Kornfeld are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings to further support their recovery and Alanon is recommended for family members and loved ones.

Dr. Kornfeld also works with clients suffering from co-occurring disorders using traditional talk therapy and medication management.
