Doron's TopangaDoron’s House Review

Five years ago, Doron Sears founded Doron’s House in Topanga Canyon, California. Sears, who is in recovery, believes that sober living is essential for newcomers to build a foundation in their new healthy lifestyles. As the name suggests, Sears lives alongside his clients in the serene Spanish villa that is shrouded by trees and nestled in lush greenery.

Accommodations and Amenities

Sears keeps the numbers small—the co-ed villa has a six-bed capacity and is comprised of four casitas (little houses) featuring private entrances and small balconies. There are also two double-occupancy semi-private suites in the main house. One suite has a staircase leading to a private bathroom with a sunken bathtub and separate shower. All bedrooms include flat screen TV’s and Wi-Fi. The big house also includes a spacious living room, dining room and kitchen. Housekeeping services are provided.

The kitchen is stocked with gluten-free goodies, plus a gourmet coffee and juice bar. For the most part, the clients eat on their own schedule, but group dinner is provided five times per week. Sears prepares organic dinners after gathering input from clients about their preferences. Favorite entrees include barbequed chicken, fish and steak.

Rules and Regulations

In order to live at Doron’s House, clients must have completed an inpatient program at a substance abuse treatment facility. Beyond this, Doron is very openminded and individuals who have co-occurring disorders, as well as those wanting a non-12-step based approach are welcomed. Length of stay is typically between 90 days and six months, but varies per client. Residents typically range between the ages of 32 and 47.

Clients are encouraged to pursue their own aftercare schedules during the day while staff oversees their efforts. Doron’s House helps clients keep their medical and mental health appointments, provides time management support, and offers medical, dental and professional referrals. The staff also provides nutritional counseling, recovery relapse prevention coaching and personal fitness training.

Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. The curfew is 11 pm during the week, and midnight during the weekends. Transportation to 12-step and other recovery support group meetings is provided upon request. Besides Sears who is a CADACC registered recovery worker, staff includes a Master’s-level resident counselor who provides dual diagnosis support.

Extras

There is a home theater room, complete with reclining seats and surround sound, treadmill, steam room, sauna, sunbathing deck and meditation area. In addition to the on-site workout equipment, clients receive free memberships to the local gym.

Doron’s House is pet-friendly. Sears welcomes dogs of any size or breed and sometimes accepts more than one dog, depending on the client’s circumstances.

In Summary

Doron’s House provides clients a serene retreat plus individualized attention and care. The tranquility of Topanga Canyon is centrally located in the heart of Los Angeles, close to beautiful beaches and the great 12-step meetings in Malibu and Santa Monica. For those seeking a sober living haven where furry friends are welcome, this might be the right fit.
