Dana Point CaliforniaDonna’s House Sober Living Review

Founded in 2007 in Orange County, California, by Amy Christle, Donna’s House Sober Living provides upscale sober living for men and women. Donna’s House has seven gender-specific residences spread across three locations, including Dana Point, Capo Beach and San Juan Capistrano. The house was named after Christle’s close friend, Donna, who tragically lost her life to addiction. Besides owning Donna’s House, Christle and her husband, Ryan Schrier are the co-founders of Pacific Palms Recovery, a drug rehab located in Dana Point.

Accommodations and Amenities

Depending on the size of the house, there are between six and 13 clients in each residence. One Dana Point residence is a contemporary beige stucco house with a red tiled roof and a gray garage.  Residents are paired in furnished rooms, which include ample closet space, dressers and twin beds.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meals, which are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, laundry facility, house computers, private backyards, barbeque grills and ample parking. Residential managers live on the premises at each home.

Rules and Regulations

Donna’s House prefers that clients have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety and that they have completed primary care at a rehab. Additionally, some residents attend the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Pacific Palms Recovery. IOP residents usually have their housing and food costs covered by insurance.

Residents are introduced to the 12 steps, and are expected to attend daily or regular AA/NA meetings, depending on their day-to-day commitments. SMART Recovery meetings are an option, for those that prefer an alternative to the 12 steps. Other requirements include attending an IOP (if appropriate), actively looking for work, going to school or performing community service.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Donna’s House practices a zero tolerance policy, yet clients are not kicked out on the street. Staff works closely with a licensed MST (multi-systemic therapist) who has a licensed detox facility in the area. Residents who have relapsed, but seek a second chance, are are provided with transportation to this safe environment and around the clock supervision. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extras

Christle, who has been clean and sober for almost a decade, is a Certified National Drug and Alcohol Interventionist, as well as a Certified Addictions therapist.

The houses are located in close proximity to Saddleback College, Dana Point Harbor, San Clemente Pier, Salt Creek Beach and a plethora of recovery support meetings.

In Summary

Donna’s House staff boasts impressive credentials, and the fact that they are connected to a drug rehab with comprehensive services doesn’t hurt. Clients are sure to receive individualized attention here, and whether they choose a 12-step approach or SMART Recovery, they will find what works best for them while living in a beautiful sober living home. At Donna’s House, all clients, including those who struggle to stay sober are treated with care and respect.
