DK Sober LivingThe Basics

DK Sober Living was founded in 2002 in Santee, California, by Kat Kramm, a recovering addict. DK provides two sober living homes for both adult men and women in early recovery from alcohol or drug addiction. The home-like settings comfortable residential neighborhoods offer high-end accommodations near the beautiful San Diego beaches without the luxury price tag.

Accommodations and Amenities

DK can accommodate a total of seven residents in each house and the house managers live on site. Although there are seven beds available, the houses typically have between three and five clients at a time. DK is open to men and women of all ages, with the average age usually being around 33. The managers and clients work to maintain harmonious and peaceful living environments.

The house has three shared bedrooms and one private room (available for an extra charge). Each client has a twin bed with a fluffy down comforter, an individual dresser and bookshelf. Rooms are clean, sun-filled and modern with white carpets and walls. Although the house is co-ed, bedrooms are gender-specific. DK has two bathrooms and two spacious common rooms with TVs. There is an outdoor pool for recreation and relaxation, landscaped grounds with wildflowers and beautiful mountain views.

Clients are responsible for buying and preparing their own food. The houses have a complete kitchen with new fixtures and appliances for meal preparation. The houses also have a workstation with a computer, fax and printer. Also, each bedroom has a hook-up and desk for a laptop. Clients in each house share use of the washers, dryers and dishwashers.

Rules and Regulations

The houses provide a traditional sober living environment in that it mandates clients to be actively involved in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), enrolled in school or currently employed. Clients are also required to be involved in a 12-step or SMART Recovery program and attendance to off-site meetings three to five times a week is mandatory. DK conducts regular drug and alcohol testing to ensure sobriety.

DK encourages respect and compassion within the house, and makes sure that every client feels happy and accommodated. Every Monday night the houses have mandatory meetings for clients to discuss their progress and any roommate issues. The resident house managers live on-site and make themselves available to clients in need of someone to talk to.

Extras

In addition to the pool, the DK Santee house has a weight set available on the premises and is near several local community gyms. DK Too in La Mesa also has a pool in addition to recreation room with pool table, ping pong and Playstation 3. Clients are responsible for providing their own transportation and DK encourages them to bring their own cars, however, transportation is provided to the local trolley and bus systems.

Summary

The two DK Sober Living homes are great options for clients seeking an upscale, affordable co-ed housing environment. The recovery-supportive structure is a great fit for clients who are comfortable with a high level of independence and responsibility seeking sober living in Southern California area.
