Dirigo Counseling Clinic Review
With facilities in three Maine locations—Bangor, Ellsworth and Hampden—Dirigo Counseling Clinic provides an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to adults with alcoholism and substance abuse issues in addition to evaluating juveniles under 18 with alcohol and/or drug dependence. Dirigo also evaluates persons who have violated federal DOT regulations and provides assessments under Maine’s Driver Evaluation and Educational Providers program.
The facility was founded in 2004 by Alan Algee, a licensed counselor, psychotherapist and addiction specialist with 25 years of experience in human services, and Jill Peters, a management expert. Both still run Dirigo Counseling.
Treatment and Staff
At Dirigo, clients play a proactive role in their recovery and work closely with their primary counselor in identifying goals and problem solving. They even have input in deciding whether a particular counselor is a good fit.
During Dirigo’s 12-week IOP, clients participate in a minimum of nine hours a week of therapy. Counselors use CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and family transactional therapy in addition to other therapies, as needed. Clients typically have individual therapy once a week, totaling about 10 sessions during the course of treatment. Group sessions are held weekly for between one and three hours and tend to be no larger than five persons. Dual diagnosis services are also available.
Clinical staff members work at all three locations and the staff-to-client ratio is one-to-15. Staff credentials include LCPC, LCSW, LADC, SAP and CEAP.
Dirigo doesn’t offer 12 step or SMART Recovery. Detox isn’t offered either, but a referral can be made.
Extras
In Dirigo’s family program, which is part of follow-up, family members work with counselors to understand the effects of substance abuse and to learn how to cope with an afflicted loved one.
Counselors also provide aftercare, which consists of additional group work and referrals to case management services when appropriate.

Dirigo Counseling has a homey feeling, reflecting its philosophy that recovery is a family affair and that a client must be actively engaged in his or her own recovery. Offering IOP for alcohol and substance abuse, in addition to evaluation services for juveniles who are struggling with chemical dependency, Dirigo’s facilities are a solid choice for Maine residents who need outpatient treatment but cannot take time away from jobs or other responsibilities to recover in a residential setting.
