Dexter HouseThe Basics

Tricia Jones, her husband Bob and Bob’s brother Rich Raftery established The Dexter House in 2013. This male-only sober living facility is located in North East, Maryland about an hour (you guessed it) northeast of Baltimore. Named after their friend Dexter Miller who passed away from a heart attack when he had seven months of sobriety, The Dexter House, was a long time aspiration for the founders. Since it opened, The Dexter House expanded to include the male-only Dexter House II and Charlotte House, a sober living home for women.

Accommodations and Amenities

The original Dexter House is a quaint Americana-style single-family house. The house has a large wraparound porch furnished with rocking chairs and American flags. Both Dexter Houses and Charlotte House accommodate eight clients at a time. The comfortable, well-kept houses include a kitchen, bathroom, dining room and living room.

Residents share double-occupancy rooms that are spacious, yet simply furnished. The original house includes wood floors, ceiling fans, and custom painted walls. The word Surrender is painted over the dining room doorway. Similarly, the spiritual principles, Honesty, Acceptance, Surrender, Hope, Commitment, Faith and Courage are successively painted on the steps of the living room’s staircase.

Residents purchase their own groceries and prepare their meals. Typically, dinner is a family-style affair where residents break bread over the dining room table. Each house has a live-in manager. The houses are close to public transportation that provides easy access to job opportunities and 12-step meetings.

Rules and Regulations

The Dexter House carefully screens applicants in person, making sure that they are an appropriate fit. An ideal candidate has completed at least 30 days in an inpatient substance abuse treatment facility. The Dexter House gives information such as curfew times and other regulations to prospective applicants during the interview process to make sure they understand the commitment required. The admission cost is $200, and a 30-day cost is $600.

Since Dexter House follows a 12-step protocol, clients must attend regular AA/NA meetings and get a sponsor. They also must attend the weekly in-house meeting. At Dexter House, clients must gain viable employment as soon as possible. Staff assists clients with finding jobs and helps them with the application and interview process. Clients are also encouraged to pursue their academic education, have an exercise routine and do community volunteer work.

Extras

Dexter House teaches life skills which include gardening, cooking, couponing and money management. Clients participate in events that include baseball game outings, fishing and other outdoor activities promoting a sense of community among the house members.

In Summary

The Dexter House is ingrained in the 12-steps and for those seeking that protocol in their recovery, this is a great match. While Dexter House often has a few availabilities, beds at Charlotte House are in high demand and there has been a waiting list for prospective female clients since it opened. Those interested should apply as soon as possible.
