Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health of Victoria, Texas is a part of a much larger network of residential and outpatient treatment facilities with several locations throughout the US. Victoria, Texas is located between San Antonio and Houston, about 30 miles inland from the Gulf Coast. The adult and young adult residential program at this campus offers adults with severe emotional and developmental disabilities a safe and supportive community to learn new life skills, with the intention of transitioning into an independent living situation.
Accommodations and Food
The adult residential facility on the Victoria campus sits on over 400 acres of heavily wooded and private land covered in native Texas wildflowers and wildlife. There are five separate units where clients live, all multi level homes, which either have four single rooms or four double occupancy rooms in different wings.
Each of the homes has a large community kitchen and shared living room with TV. There are also dining rooms and recreation areas, and multi purpose back decks, which are furnished and used for BBQ’s and parties on occasion. Additionally the grounds contain a fishing pond, several hiking and nature trails, a pool and gymnasium.
Treatment and Staff
The programming at Devereux Texas’ Victoria campus is mainly designed to help clients develop independent living skills that will eventually lead them to living on their own. There are many different options for support during their stay, and there is no set amount of time that clients are expected to remain in treatment, as it all goes at each client’s individual pace.
Treatment is aimed towards those who are struggling with a dual diagnosis along with mental health issues, like bipolar disorder, mood disorders, and the aforementioned intellectual disabilities. In addition to treatment for mental health, there is also a strong focus on daily life skills, like money management, meal prep, leisure skills and home management. Clients obtain valuable skills to seek out employment during their stay as well, and have plenty of hands on work experiences.
These programs are very structured and rarely stray from the set daily schedule. There are daily group meetings and counseling sessions, followed by training and skills classes. Devereux employs evidence-based treatment methods such as CBT and DBT. It also integrates experiential therapies like psychodrama and music and art therapy. Each client receives treatment that is strength based and focused on achieving personal goals. There are medication management services offered in addition to regular assessments throughout the client’s stay.
Program staff includes psychiatrists and nurses, vocational professionals, medical doctors and a recreational therapist.
Extras
Pre-vocational training and educational skills include working in the Devereux gardens, bakery and the floral gift shop. There are also classes in horticulture, kitchen crafting, retail, janitorial services and working with animals.
