The girls residential treatment program through Devereux Advanced Behavioral Healthcare’s Massachusetts division is geared toward adolescents and young adults who are struggling with pervasive mental health disorders, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Treatment includes 12-step support and DBT along with addressing self harm and reducing emotional dysregulation. The girls attend school along with regular group and individual therapy for an average of one year.
Accommodations and Staff
The girls program houses clients in both a cottage and residential group home setting. These facilities offer home-like accommodations with shared bedrooms and bathrooms. There are usually between six and eight clients living together at one time, and they share common areas like a living room, kitchen and dining area. At the beginning of treatment clients stay in a more clinical environment on campus that has dorm style sleeping arrangements, and from there they move into the two story cottage home.
Treatment and Staff
The girls program has several elements that lend itself to success. Clients can expect several therapeutic group sessions per week, like relapse prevention, anger management and coping skills. On top of that there are adventure based counseling groups, bullying prevention and health/fitness education. These additional therapeutic groups are attended at least five times per week along with their regular treatment schedule. There are mentoring services and the use of motivational tools, like off campus trips and a program that lends out minibikes. There are also a variety of vocational training opportunities and community learning events, like obtaining a driver’s license, learning how to grocery shop and cook, and other skills that promote self sufficiency.
DBT trained clinicians facilitate individual therapy on a weekly basis and clear program goals are laid out right away. There is a diary card that every client needs to have filled out per week that states how many AA or NA meetings they attended, how many group sessions and drug test results for the week. There are also daily cards that are filled out by clients as a way of self monitoring their moods and treatments. Pharmacology is an option with clients meeting with a psychiatric nurse practitioner as well as the use of the “chill out” room, which is a quiet place on campus that ha bean bag chairs, relaxing music and reading materials that serves as a place where clients can work on their self regulation techniques.
Therapeutic staff are Master’s-level therapists who are LCSWs, psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and special educators. The staff-to-client ratio is three-to-one in the residential setting and six-to-one during school.
Some of the extracurricular activities clients enjoy include cheerleading, culinary training, art and music classes, dance and crafting. There are also chances to attend movies off campus in small groups, or take karate classes or participate on a group sports team. On the school side of campus there is a computer lab, gym, and library, and clients can participate in the animal care program with shelter dogs and cats and an automotive program.
The girls program through Devereux’s Massachusetts location is incredibly valuable. It not only provides a structure and outline for residents, but also creates a high level of self esteem and purpose. After the clients are discharged from the program, they reenter their communities with a bevy of new skills and experiences, which promotes healthy outlooks and lessens the chance of them returning to drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism.
