Devereux Connecticut Review

Devereux Connecticut is host to The Glenholme School, a therapeutic boarding school for boys and girls who are between the ages of 10 and 18. In addition to the full educational curriculum, clients also undergo group and individual therapy that uses the Positive Behavioral Intervention Support model to help maladaptive behaviors become ineffective. Evidence-based approaches are commonly utilized to help build upon each individual’s personal strengths to progress talents and help them achieve their goals. Devereux Connecticut is part of the larger conglomerate Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health, which has facilities and affiliates across the country.

Accommodations and Food

The Washington, Connecticut campus sits on over 110 acres of land that is covered with exotic greenery that was transplanted to create a visually stunning and serene environment. There are 105 students living on the grounds and they all reside in cottages that can accommodate 10 to 12 residents each. These cottages have double occupancy bedrooms and full kitchens and dining rooms. The campus has a shared media room with computers and TVs as well. Personal devices, like tablets and cell phones, are not permitted.

All food is provided by Glenholme, and clients learn how to prepare their own meals as part of the curriculum.

Treatment and Staff

On average, clients stay at The Glenholme School for around two years, during which time they experience a highly structured schedule of schooling, enrichment activities and therapy. In the case of therapy and education, clients have have an individualized environment with a lot of one on one treatment or within small groups. At the beginning of each term, clients have meetings with their advisors and counselors to establish treatment and educational goals. During the year there are several check in’s with staff and client to assess their progress.

Treatment uses CBT approaches to help improve social skills and enhance communication. A LCSW works closely with the student to help identify maladaptive behaviors and become aware of social triggers. Clients receive treatment in an office setting along with the classroom or in their cottages.

Families benefit from additional education and counseling, and in home consultations are incorporated into each client’s programming. This provides an opportunity for loved ones to receive some tips for reinforcement after the client leaves The Glenholme School and returns to their community full time. These services are offered and co-ordinated by the the family’s social worker and clinical treatment staff.
