Treatment through Devereux is evidence-based and can addresses substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
Esperanza is a seven bed facility that is co-ed, however clients who are of the same gender never share a bedroom. During their 14 day stay clients reside in a two bedrooms, two bath house. The single story home is spacious and provides a safe and cozy environment. Everything is provided for the clients, including meals and snacks.
Treatment and Staff
The programs offered through Esperanza are individualized and client focused, with plenty of one on one attention. Programming is aimed towards clients who are in the midst of a mental health crisis or those who are struggling with a chemical dependency. Staff is on site 24 hours a day to monitor every kid, and medication management is provided if needed.
Though treatment is short term, no more than two weeks, it is intensive and thorough. There are several group sessions daily and weekly individual therapy. Clients participate in experiential treatments and have life skills classes. In many cases, these clients are in the foster care system and are in transition between homes, so the staff focuses on stabilization and making sure they feel safe and cared for.
Therapeutic approaches include CBT, DBT, and holistic methods, like art and music therapy. There are also expressive modalities like play therapy, dance, theater and sandplay therapies. In some cases clients also journal or have creative writing classes. Staff emphasizes clients learning how to control their anger, communication, and developing social skills.
Devereux employs LCSW, LMFT, psychiatrists and child psychologists. Additionally, Esperanza has foster parents who are trained in taking care of the kids in this program.
Family education and counseling are provided during this program.
Esperanza is a unique program in that it takes kids who are having a hard time in their lives and offering a safe place to be themselves without fear of judgment. Since this is a program mainly dedicated to kids who are in foster care, there is an extra layer of worry. Devereux makes it clear in their mission that this program is designated to helping young people during an incredibly vulnerable time in their lives find some steady ground.
