Detroit MichiganDetroit VA Medical Center Substance Use Disorder Services (SUDS) Review

The Detroit VA Medical Center is a medical service provider exclusively for United States veterans. Located in Detroit, Michigan, the substance abuse treatment program at DVA is known as Substance Use Disorder Services (SUDS) and offers both a basic outpatient track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Treatment and Staff

In addition to the substance abuse treatment tracks, SUDS offers assessments as well as both inpatient and outpatient detox services with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those addicted to opioids. Clients who do not require detox meet with an intake counselor who enrolls them in the appropriate treatment program and pairs them with a case manager who reviews their history and records to develop an individualized plan.

Both levels of treatment consist of group and individual therapy, opioid treatment, relapse prevention, family therapy, transitional aid, vocational services and aftercare planning. Group sessions are held intermittently throughout the week and one-on-one sessions are scheduled independently. Clients enrolled in the less intensive outpatient track attend fewer than 10 hours per week of treatment while IOP clients must attend a minimum of 10 hours per week. The 12-steps are not integrated into the program, but attendance of meetings is highly encouraged by counselors and referrals to local chapters are provided upon request.

The facility is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7 am to 4:30 pm and on Tuesdays from 7 am to 7:30 pm. Staff at DVA consists of LCSWs and CAADCs.

Extras

In addition to the comprehensive IOP and regular outpatient treatment program, DVA also offers a variety of other programs and services to clients and the broader community. Gender-specific services for Women veterans, homeless veteran’s services, caregiver services and full primary health care are all available at the DVA Medical Center.

In Summary

The SUDS program at the Detroit VA Medical center offers a solid outpatient treatment program tailored specifically for veterans seeking detox and care for substance abuse. Individualized tracks allow for clients to work on their recovery goals while maintaining their daily work, life and family obligations for the best possible chance at recovery.
